GC Women’s Basketball Downs Averett 49-39

The Greensboro College women’s basketball team (10-8 Overall, 6-6 USA South) outscored Averett (5-14 Overall, 4-8 USA South) 27-16 in the second half to rally for a 49-39 win on Saturday afternoon.

The Pride put the first six points of the day on the board but found themselves in a 10-10 tie at the 12:33 mark in the first half. The Cougars used a 9-0 spurt to grab their first lead of the day go on top 19-10 with 6:19 left.

Trailing 21-12, Greensboro would use a 8-0 run of its own to close the gap to 21-20. The teams would trade baskets down the stretch with Averett taking a 23-22 advantage into the break.

Just as they had in the first half, The Pride would use a strong start to the second, building a 35-28 lead with 13:17 showing on the clock. The margin would grow to 38-30 before the Cougars chipped away, pulling to within 40-37 with 4:11 to play.

However, Bianca Richburg, who was in the midst of a rare off night, converted a lay-up and a three on back-to-back possessions to extend the lead back to 45-37 with 2:16 to go in the game.

The lead would grow to as many as 12 points before settling on the final score of 49-39.

Jena Cabe finished with a game high 17 points on 6-10 shooting for Greensboro. She connected on 4-7 attempts from three. Chevena Pickard added a double-double with 13 points and ten rebounds, while Richburg finished with seven points and nine boards.

Overall, The Pride shot 32.8% from the field and 31.6% from beyond the arc. Greensboro hit on 41.7% (5-12) of its three point opportunities in the second half. Defensively, The Pride limited Averett to 27.1% shooting for the game and forced 20 turnovers.

Greensboro will be back at home on Sunday against Mary Baldwin. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. on the Mayo C. Harlow Court at Hanes Gym.
