The Guilford Tech baseball team started off the 2013 campaign with a doubleheader sweep of Danville Community College on Saturday. The Titans overcame a cold and blustery day to down the Knights by scores of 4-1 and 7-0.
In Game 1, Titan pitcher Darren Lauer allowed only 1 hit over 4 shutout innings of work to pick up his first collegiate win by the score of 4-1. TJ Wharton, Brandon Burkes, and Tyler Coan led the way at the plate for Tech with each collecting 2 hits apiece. Edwin Soto added an RBI for the Titans as well.
Game 2 was more of the same as the Titans scored 5 runs in the 5th inning to cruise past DCC 7-0. The Titans took an early 1-0 lead with a first inning RBI single by Zannie Seagraves. Brandon Burkes hit an RBI double in the bottom of the 5th inning to push the Tech lead to 2-0. Later in that same inning, Titan shortstop Carlos Alegria broke the game open for the Titans with a grand slam to left field. Titan southpaw Ernesto Fernandez tossed 4 scoreless innings and allowed only 1 hit to pick up his first collegiate win as well.
The Titans return to action tomorrow as they host Rockingham Community College in a doubleheader. Game time is 1 pm and will be played at Ragsdale High School.
