Elon Women’s Tennis Comes Up Victorious at Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team won its third straight competition today, Feb. 4, after topping Gardner-Webb, 6-1, at the Webb Tennis Complex.

The Phoenix improves to 3-1 on the year, while the Runnin’ Bulldogs fall to 0-1 with the setback. The two teams played five singles matches and two doubles matches and the maroon and gold won all but one.

The tandem of Jordan Johnston and Frida Jansaker improved to 6-1 on the year in doubles play, topping Yasmin Doost and Jenny Lunde, 8-2, at the No. 1 slot. Taylor Casey and Viviana Stavreva were victorious at No. 2 after claiming a hard-fought 8-6 decision versus Valeria Popko and Erica White.

Briana Berne, ranked 119th in the nation, won rather quickly at No. 4 singles versus Rokia Sacko, claiming a 6-0, 6-0, decision to extend Elon’s lead.

Frida Jansaker topped Doost in straight sets at No. 2, 6-2, 6-0, while Bryn Khoury was victorious at No. 3, 6-3, 6-0, against Jenny Lunde.

At No. 5 singles, Maria Camara Ruiz registered a 6-3, 6-2, win in straight sets over Popko.

Elon plays its first match of the season at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 9, with a doubleheader against NC Central (9:30 a.m.) and NC Wesleyan (2:30 p.m.).
