GC Women’s Basketball Dealt 69-58 Setback Against Methodist

The Pride women’s basketball team ( 11-9 overall, 7-7 USA South) watched a second half lead slip away in a 69-58 home defeat to Methodist (15-6 overall, 10-4 USA South) on Wednesday.

Greensboro started slow, falling behind 9-0 3:50 into the game. The Pride rallied to pull within 13-11 midway through the first half. After the Monarchs briefly pushed the margin to six, Greensboro brought the gap back 19-17 with 5:09 left before going into the break down 24-23.

The Pride kicked off the second half with a lay-up by Bianca Richburg to take their first lead of the night at 25-24. Two free throws by Richburg at the 15:24 mark extended the lead to 32-29.

Methodist came back to tie the game at 32-32 before Jena Cabe scored six straight Greensboro points to grab a 38-34 advantage with 12:06 to play. The margin would hit its largest total at six points following a layup by Amber Hair with 8:35 showing on the clock.

The Monarchs would battle back again, this time evening the score at 48-48 and 50-50 before making a move to put the game away. Methodist would use a 17-1 run over the course of four minutes to take a commanding 67-51 lead with 1:04 to go in the game.

By the time The Pride recovered it was too late, as Greensboro finished the game on an 8-2 spurt but came up on the short end of a 69-58 final.

Richburg led all Greensboro scorers with 24 points to go along with a team high 14 rebounds. Cabe also finished in double figures in scoring with 11 points.

The Pride shot 38.9% from the field compared to 36.9% for the Monarchs. Greensboro also held a 43-38 edge in rebounding. However, The Pride committed 29 turnovers which led to 18 Methodist points. Greensboro was also outscored in transition 22-6.

The Pride will look to rebound at Christopher Newport on Saturday at 2 p.m.
