Offensive Attack Leads GC Baseball Past Guilford 14-9

The Pride baseball team (2-0 overall) exploded for 19 hits on Wednesday afternoon to take down cross town rival Guilford (1-2 overall) 14-9. Greensboro fell behind by scores of 3-0 and 7-2 but put up four runs in the sixth and seven in the eighth to cement the comeback.

For the second straight game, The Pride found themselves in an early hole as the Quakers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning of play. Greensboro loaded the bases in the top of the second but came up empty.

The Pride offense broke through in the third, narrowing the gap to 3-2 with the help of RBI base hits by James Feldmann and Austin Catherina. Guilford responded in the fourth with four runs to extend the lead to 7-2.

The Greensboro bats were back at work immediately in the sixth, pounding out four runs on five hits to climb to within 7-6. Kenny Graham and Matt Irwin each provided RBI singles with Seth Caison polishing things off with a two RBI triple to center field.

The Pride took their first lead of the day in the eighth with the help of a bases loaded walk and RBI fielder’s choice. Greensboro continued to pour it on in the frame, scoring seven total runs on five hits, highlighted by a bases clearing double to center by Matthew Parker.

Guilford would score two runs in the seven to bring the score to 13-9 before Feldmann singled home Matt Irwin in the top of the ninth for the final score of the game.

Catherina posted a Pride team best four hits in five at-bats with two runs scored and an RBI. Also contributing three hits apiece were Irwin and Feldmann. Joshua Powell finished with two hits. Feldmann and Caison each lead the team in RBI with three, while Irwin scored a team leading four runs.

Brandon Matthews earned the win in 2.0 innings of scoreless releif. Harrison Hall started the game and worked 4.1 innings before handing the ball off to the bullpen.

Greensboro will open the USA South and home slates this weekend a three day, three game series against Piedmont. Game one is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday at Leonard Park in Greensboro, NC.
