Game Report on Southwest Guilford(21-0/10-0) tonight as Cowboys win on Senior Night with 32 points from Terrell Leach

It was an emotional night for the Cowboys as they played hosts to the Eagles of East Forsyth. It was Senior night for Southwest and said goodbye to three members of the team.

The Cowboys were able to hold on for a ten point victory at East Forsyth last month, and were hoping to keep the perfect season going and send these Seniors out in style, while the Eagles were trying to crash the party. The Eagles come out on fire while the Cowboys seemed to be running in quicksand. East converted on it’s first 5 trips while the Cowboys didn’t score once, opening the game 10-0 by the 5:44 mark. After a timeout to let the boys calm down, Southwest rallied quickly by scoring 11 straight to take the lead 11-10 by the 3:36 mark. The teams went back and forth the rest of the quarter including a layup by the Eagles just before the quarter buzzer taking the Eagles ahead 22-21.

A quarter opening 3 by the Cowboys gave them the lead again, but the Eagles responded with 9 straight points taking the lead to 32-24 midway through the frame. Once again SW responded and grinded back to tie the game up and denying a basket at the buzzer to head into the locker room gridlocked at 39.

The second half opened with back-to-back 3’s by the Eagles. But the Cowboys responded with a 9-0 run of their own to take a 48-45 lead. The Cowboys held the lead but the Eagles kept it within a point until SW broke the trend and scored 4 straight, and ultimately took a 61-56 lead going into the fourth.

The final quarter was filled with drama as the Cowboys got the lead out to 8, and kept it around there, until a flourish off thunderous dunks on 3 straight steals by Antonio Banks and Terrell Leach to steal the momentum and send the packed gym into a frenzy with the Cowboys taking a 76-62 lead at 4:53. The Eagles wouldn’t go away silently, and used some clutch 3’s and some mishaps by the Cowboys to make it close at the end. One of Leach’s 12 rebounds on the night sealed it when he got an offensive rebound on a rare miss from the freethrow line by Ben Ferguson, and wound more clock down as the Eagles were fouling in the final minutes.

In the end the Cowboys come away victorious 93-85. With the victory the Cowboys are the Piedmont Triad 4A Conference champs.

The Eagles were led by Larry Curry with 23.

The Cowboys had 4 players in double figures: Terrell Leach (32, 12 Reb, 2 Blk, 2 Stl), DJ Chamblee (15, 4 Ast), KJ Langley (14, 5 Stl, 3 Ast), and Ben Ferguson (11, 3 Ast, 2 Reb, 2 Reb, 2 Stl). Southwest remains perfect on the year.
