High Point Women’s Basketball Tops Radford, 65-57, For Third-Straight Road Win

RADFORD, VA – Sophomore Lexi Patterson scored a career-high 13 points and went 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the final two minutes to lead the High Point University women’s basketball team to a 65-57 win at Radford on Saturday afternoon.

With the game tied 57-57 Patterson made all four free throws and Tayler Tremblay also went 4-for-4 form the line to secure the 65-57 win. Tremblay finished with a team-high 16 points.

“It is huge to win on the road in league play,” said head coach DeUnna Hendrix. “Radford is a very physical team. In order to beat them you have to fight for every loose ball and get every rebound. Lexi played really well, especially down the stretch and that started with a great week of practice.”

Junior Cheyenne Parker finished the night with 14 points, 20 rebounds and five blocks.. It is her second-straight game with 20 rebounds. Redshirt-sophomore Lindsay Puckett added 12 points.

Ashley Buckhannon led the Highlanders with 20 points and Da’Naria Erwin-Spencer added 10.

The teams played a back and forth first half, trading the lead six times. Puckett dished the ball inside for Jazmin Cromartie who laid it in to give High Point a 9-5 lead with 14:42 on the clock. The Highlanders went on a 9-0 run over the next five minutes to capture a 14-9 lead. Tremblay ended High Point’s scoring drought with a jumper at 9:51. She rolled off the screen and made the shot from the free-throw line.

Parker was fouled by La-She’ Walker on a made layup. She also drained the free throw to tie the game 14-14 with 7:51 on the clock. Tremblay and Cromartie both converted a pair of free throws to give the Panthers an 18-15 lead. Aisha Foy and Buckhannon both made layups to give Radford back the lead, 21-18, with 5:29 remaining in the first half.

Puckett tied the game, 21-21, with a three pointer assisted by Tremblay. At the other end of the court Puckett was fouled going up for the defensive rebound. She made her first free throw to put High Point ahead by one with 4:18 to play. Radford briefly took the lead back, 23-22 on a basket by Erwin-Spencer. Puckett responded with a jumper just inside the three-point line as the shot clock expired and High Point led Radford, 27-25 at halftime.

The Panthers went on an 11-0 run to open up a 45-35 lead over Radford with 12:49 left in the game. Robertson started the run with a steal and a fastbreak layup and Patterson had two made free throws and a three-pointer in the run.

Radford fought back to tie the game, 57-57 with three minutes remaining. Sarah Tabb drained a pair of free throws to even the score. After a minute and a half of scoreless play Patterson was fouled by Erwin-Spencer. She went to the line and made both free throws to give HPU its final lead of the game, 59-57. In the final stretch Tremblay went 4-for-4 from the line and Patterson hit two more to secure the win 65-57.

It was the third-straight road win for High Point. The Panthers improve to 14-9 overall and 8-4 in league play. Radford falls to 12-10 on the season with a 7-6 mark in league play.

The Panthers will return to the Millis Center on Feb. 14 for a 7 p.m. against UNC Asheville. High Point beat the Bulldogs 58-57 on Dec. 29.
