Red Hot GC Men’s Basketball Holds Off Maryville 90-79

The Pride men’s basketball team (14-8 overall, 7-5 USA South) used a hot shooting effort and a stifling defense to fend off Maryville (9-13 overall, 4-9 USA South) for a 90-79 road win on Saturday. The win is the team’s sixth in a row and the eighth in the past nine games.

Greensboro shot lights out in the first half, connecting on 58.3% (21-36) of its field goal attempts and 71.4% (10-14) of its three point tries. Hitting on all cylinders, The Pride turned an early deficit into a double digit halftime lead.

Of its first 11 field goals of the game, Greensboro made nine shots from beyond the three-point arc. The Pride also turned up the pressure on defense, forcing 16 first half turnovers.

At the break, three Greensboro players had already reached double figures in scoring led by Damian Dixon’s 12 points. Brian Thomas added 11, while Chakiris Moss contributed ten.

The Pride continued to build on their 53-38 halftime lead, going up by as many as 19 points before the Scots made one final push. Maryville climbed to within 81-75 with just over three minutes to play before a trey by Devonta Davis pushed the margin back to nine.

Greensboro converted at the charity line in the final minutes, making five foul shots in the final minutes to pull out the 90-79 final.

Dixon led all scorers with 22 points. Thomas finished the day with 20 points, Davis tallied 17 and Moss had 14. Overall, The Pride shot 56.1% from the field and 60.9% (14-23) from three. Greensboro was outrebounded 29-21 but forced 28 Scot turnovers.

The Pride will be back at home on Wednesday against Methodist. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on the Mayo C. Harlow Court at Hanes Gym.
