College Baseball Final – Averett 4, Guilford 1

DANVILLE, Va.—Averett University hurler Tyler Long struck out five and scattered four hits over seven innings in the Cougars’ 4-1 win over Guilford College Thursday afternoon.

The Quakers (2-3) grabbed the early lead in the top of the second inning off of a Will Byrd single into left field, driving home Justin Pittman (Archdale, N.C./Trinity). Byrd and pitman went two-for-four a piece.

Byrd’s second hit came in the top of the ninth, moving Ben Esser to second base. After Casey Mann hit into a fielder’s choice to second base, Jordan Slate (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) earned his fourth walk of the day to load the bases before Averett closer Cody Beaver retired D.J. Phillips to earn his second save of the year.

Borja Jones-Berasaluce (0-1) threw six innings and fanned six batters while scattering two earned runs on seven hits.

The Quakers return to action Sunday at 2 p.m., hosting the University of Maine Presque-Isle at McBane Field.
