GC Men’s Lacrosse Loses Double Overtime Decision to Colorado College

The Pride men’s lacrosse team (0-2 overall) fell to Colorado College (1-0 overall) 10-9 in double overtime on Friday afternoon.

The Tigers Charles Curtis scored the final two goals of the game, the first coming at the 6:03 mark in the fourth period to send the game to overtime. The second was the golden goal clincher with 11 ticks left in the second overtime period.

It was a back and forth game from the beginning with neither team able to go up by more then two goals. Greensboro struck first 6:30 into the contest with an unassisted goal by Blaine Wise.

Following a Colorado goal, Maxx Aiken put The Pride back on top with an unassisted score with 4:30 to go in the first. The Tigers would finish the frame on a strong note, converting two goals to take a 3-2 lead after one.

Both teams would add one goal in the second with Greensboro’s coming on a man-up tally by Justin Pearson less then five minutes in. Alexander Vander Hoff provided the assist on the play.

Pearson opened up the second half with an early goal from Denis Radcliffe to knot the score again at 4-4. After Colorado regained the lead at 5-4, Vander Hoff beat the keeper for back-to-back goals to give The Pride a 6-5 advantage.

The Tigers fired back, running off three unanswered goals to take the largest lead of the day at 8-6. Scott Showalter had an answer for Greensboro before the end of the third period, with two goals in the final 3:11 to send the game into the final quarter tied at 8-8.

James Furlow found the scoreboard 1:11 into the fourth to make it 9-8 in favor of The Pride. The goal would be the last of the day for Greensboro as Curtis and Colorado rallied for the 10-9 win.

The Pride won nearly every statistical category. Greensboro outshot the Tigers 42-41, picked up 49 ground balls compared to 39 for Colorado, won 15 of the 21 faceoffs, and had ten extra man opportunities to five for the Tigers.

Individually, Showalter and Vander Hoff each recorded a game high two goals. Vander Hoff also added one assist to finish with a team best three points. Jaeger Carlyle fired a team high nine shots with Showalter putting a team high five shots on goal.

Skip Jakupi won 14-20 faceoff attempts and led the team with 11 groundballs. Mitchell Kanowicz took the loss in goal despite making 15 saves.

The Pride will next be in action on Wednesday, hosting cross-town rival Guilford. The game will be played at 3:30 p.m. on Pride Field.
