GC Softball Splits Home Opener with Lynchburg

The Pride softball team split with Lynchburg on Friday afternoon, winning game one 10-8 before dropping game two 9-3. Greensboro would have to rally in game one after falling behind by six runs in the top of the first.

Greensboro would strike with three runs in the bottom of the first. Alex Wickham would start the season off with a double. Jackie Nicholson plated Wickham on an RBI single for the first run of the season. Sarah Connolly scored Nicholson with a single. Sarah Tompkins then doubled in Freeman to cut the gap to 6-3.

The Pride would add another run in the third on a double by Reihle Kash. However the Hornets would respond with a run in the fourth.

Greensboro would make a run of its own in the fourth, scoring four runs to take an 8-7. Dawn Harris started the frame off with a single. Chelsea Brewer scored Shelby Drummonds on a RBI single. A Taylor Freeman walk tied the game for The Pride. Kash plated Brewer for the first lead of the season and Sarah Connolly sacrifice fly would be the final run of the inning.

Greensboro would keep adding to its lead in the fifth and sixth innings on a fielder’s choice by Brewer and single by Drummonds down the stretch to help seal the win.

In game one Kash led The Pride with three hits. Five other Pride players had two hits. Greensboro outhit Lynchburg 16-8. Hannah Pennell got her first win of the season going 3.1 innings, while giving up two hits and one run.

In game two, The Pride would fall behind by two runs in the first two innings. Freeman would get Greensboro on the board in the bottom of the second with a home run to left center field. Connolly would tie the game with an RBI single, plating Nicholson.

Lynchburg would add five runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to grab a 7-2 lead. Greensboro would add the final run of the game in the seventh on a double by Wickham scoring Kierstin Mckenna.

The Pride were led by Wickham with two hits in the defeat. Nicholson, Freeman, and Connolly each had one hit apiece.

The Pride softball team will be back in action February 19 with a doubleheader at Roanoke. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
