College Women’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 18, Sewanee 5

GREENSBORO, N.C. – E’leyna Garcia scored six goals and Lily Colley added five in Guilford College’s 18-5 women’s lacrosse win over the University of the South in both teams’ season opener. The victory marked the first at Guilford for Quakers’ head coach Sarah Lamphier, who took over the team in September.

Garcia and Colley both scored three times in the first 12 minutes as the Quakers (1-0) raced to an 8-0 lead. Mallory Grimm got the Tigers (0-1) on the board with 13:21 left in the half, but Guilford closed out the period on a 5-2 run for a 13-3 halftime lead. The Quakers yielded only one even-strength goal in the second half and controlled possession with an 18-7 edge in draw controls in the game.

Garcia added two assists, six ground balls and three draws. Colley had a helper and three ground balls. Eleanora Keene scored four times and notched game highs in ground balls (8), draw controls (8) and caused turnovers (3). Becca Colley contributed two goals, three ground balls and five draw controls. Goaltender Liza Mettler stopped eight shots and picked up three ground balls.

Wittney Reed paced the Tigers with two scores and two draw controls. Anna Morrow caused two turnovers and added an assist and four ground balls. Rookie neminder Sammy Strasburger had nine saves in her college debut.

Guilford is back in action Feb. 25 when it hosts the Rochester Institute of Technology at 7:00 p.m.
