GC Baseball Defeats Ferrum in Extra Innings to Even Series

The Greensboro baseball team (5-3, 2-3 USA South) defeated Ferrum (3-5, 1-4 USA South) on Saturday afternoon to even their three game series at one win apiece. The Pride rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to beat the Panthers in ten innings.

Ferrum would strike first with three runs in the first inning. Greensboro would get on the board in the fourth with four runs.

Steven Pfeiffer and Bill Wooding would get the inning going with back-to-back walks. Kyle Williard plated both runners with an RBI single to center field to cut the deficit to 3-2. Kyle Schmidt scored Brian Robbett on a single to right field to tie the game at 3-3 and Seth Caison brought in the final run of the inning on a single, scoring Williard to give The Pride their first lead at 4-3.

The Panthers answered back to tie the game at 4-4 in the fourth inning before Greensboro struck with three runs in the fifth.

Pfeiffer would again jump start the inning with a walk. A Robbett double scored Pfeiffer to make it 5-4. Williard added to the lead with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 6-4. Greensboro plated one more on a Jordan Powell single to score Kenny Graham for a 7-4 advantage.

The Panthers tied the game at 7-7 with three runs in the fifth and then took an 8-7 lead with one in in the seventh.

The Pride fought back again with a run in the top half of the eighth on a fielder choice by Bill Wooding to tie the score at 8-8 and push the contest into extra frames.

In the top of the tenth, Greensboro plated two runs to take the lead for good. Caison brought in the first run on double to right field. James Feldmann would provide the final run of the game in on a single to right field for the 10-8 win.

Greensboro was led by Kyle Schmidt with three hits, while Williard led the way in runs batted in with three. The Pride outhit the Panthers 14-9.

Greensboro got solid efforts from their bullpen with Robbett earning the win in 2.0 innings of scoreless relief. Hunter Jenkins and Robbett each pitched two innings while not allowing a hit.

The Pride will look to win the three game series against Ferrum tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
