GC Women’s Basketball Comes up Short to Ferrum on Senior Day

The Pride women’s basketball team (12-12 overall, 8-10 USA South) gave Ferrum (22-3 overall, 16-2 USA South) all it could handle for over 30 minutes on Saturday but fell in the end 67-50.

Greensboro trailed 8-3 early but turned the tables to gain an 18-12 advantage at the 10:57 mark. After the Panthers pulled to within 18-15, The Pride ran off seven straight points to take a 26-15 lead with 6:52 to go in the first half.

Ferrum chipped away down the stretch, narrowing the gap to 29-25 at the break.

Greensboro would cling to the lead in the early minutes of the second half before the Panthers regained the lead at 34-33 with 14:40 to play. The Pride would keep it tight, tying the score at 39-39 with 10:48 showing on the clock.

Leading 43-42, the Panthers would blow it open with a 13-0 surge to take a commanding 56-42 lead with 5:55 left. Greensboro was unable to get any closer then ten points the rest of the way as Ferrum pulled out the 67-50 road win.

Playing in her final home game with The Pride, Bianca Richburg finished with a game high 23 points and nine rebounds to go along with three assists, three blocks and three steals. Chevena Pickard also had a strong showing with 18 points and six rebounds.

Both teams battled to a 40-40 tie on the boards and Greensboro forced 18 turnovers, while committing 16. The Pride shot 31.0% from the field compared to 40.8% for Ferrum.

The Pride honored Richburg and fellow senior Jena Cabe prior to the game. The pair has a total of six years of experience, with 155 games played and 149 starts. They have helped lead Greensboro to 70 wins and a share of two USA South regular season championships.

Greensboro will next be in action on Friday against an opponent to be determined at the USA South tournament in Fayetteville, NC.
