College Baseball Final – Maine-Presque Isle 12, Guilford 11

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls tallied 10 runs in the first two innings of their 12-11 nonconference win over Guilford College Tuesday at McBane Field.

The Owls (1-3) were up 10-1 after the first two innings, driving in nine hits. Ted Walker’s over-the-fence home run scored three. A series of small-ball plays by the Owls in the remainder of the first and second plated seven. The Quakers (3-4) began chipping away at the lead and tied the game at 11 runs in the bottom of the eighth. The Owls scored one run in the ninth and Guilford didn’t counter. Maine-Presque Isle out-hit the Quakers 18-10 in the win.

The Owls’ Carlos Villoria went 4-for-6 with three runs and two RBI. Joshua Gale had one run and three RBI. Seven different Maine-Presque Isle student-athletes drove in runs and eight tallied at least one RBI. Ryan Thompson (1-0) earned the team’s first win of the season. He pitched three innings and allowed two runs.

Guilford’s Jordan Slate went 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI. Kent Peterson and Casey Mann plated two apiece. Danny Ditota and Nathan Fulbright added two RBIs each. Drew Crawford (0-1) took the loss, allowing one earned run on one hit.

The Quakers play doubleheaders against Case Western Reserve University Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 22-23. The games start an noon each day at McBane Field.
