College Men’s Basketball Final – Guilford 70, Emory & Henry 60 (ODAC Tournament Game)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Matt McCarthy scored all of his team-high 17 points in a six-minute stretch of the second half to spark Guilford College’s 70-60 comeback victory over Emory & Henry College Tuesday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament game.

With their 19th straight win over Emory & Henry, the sixth-seeded Quakers (18-8) advance to a quarterfinal matchup with third-seeded Randolph-Macon College Friday (2/22) at the Salem (Va.) Civic Center. Emory & Henry ends the season with a 4-21 overall record.

McCarthy, who scored a career-high 30 at Bridgewater College last Saturday and 25 against Emory & Henry last Wednesday, did not score in the first 30 minutes Tuesday night. Guilford struggled offensively early and Tyler Driver’s three-pointer gave the Wasps a 36-26 lead with 14:53 left in regulation.
Guilford’s Jarred Hinton (Wilson, N.C./Greenfield School (Lenoir-Rhyne)) made the Quakers’ first three-pointer of the game at the 12-minute mark of the second half, which capped an 11-2 run and drew Guilford to within one. Another Driver three-pointer restored Emory & Henry’s lead to 41-37, but it did not stop Guilford’s growing momentum.

The Quakers’ Zeb Richardson (West Jefferson, N.C./Ashe County) scored an inside basket with 10 minutes left and following one of 24 Emory & Henry turnovers, McCarthy finally scored with a three-pointer that gave Guilford a 42-41 lead, its first since the opening minutes. The Quakers did not trail again as McCarthy knocked down four more treys over the next five minutes, highlighting a decisive 16-2 Quakers’ run. Guilford scored 13 straight points during the spurt, which covered less than five minutes and opened a 53-43 edge with 5:41 left.

Emory & Henry reeled off five straight points, but McCarthy stopped the Wasps cold. He drained his fifth three of the half, stole a Driver pass at the other and drove for a layup that opened a 58-48 Quakers’ edge with 3:47 remaining. Emory & Henry drew no closer than seven the rest of the way.

Guilford’s Jake Hopkins (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) shared team-high scoring honors with a career-best 17 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Sophomore reserve Will Freeman delivered 12 inside points and Hinton finished with 10, matching his career high. Quakers’ scoring leader Josh Pittman (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) shot just 2-of-9 in his first game back after a stomach bug, but finished with eight points, seven assists and four steals. The Quakers shot over 55 percent from the floor in the second half, including 7-of-10 from three-point range. Guilford outscored the Wasps, 30-18, in the paint and scored 33 points off of Emory & Henry turnovers.

The Wasps’ Myles Turner led all players with 20 points and 11 rebounds. He had 11 points and nine boards in the first half, which helped the Wasps to a 31-22 halftime lead. Driver finished with 14 points and Charles Smith added 12 points and six boards off the bench. Emory & Henry connected on over 59 percent of its first-half shots, but managed just 32 percent shooting in the second half.
