First Quarter Flurry Dooms Greensboro College Men’s Lacrosse Against Guilford

(GREENSBORO, N.C.) — The Pride men’s lacrosse team (0-3 overall) saw an early 2-0 lead evaporate in a 10-8 setback to Guilford (1-1 overall) on Wednesday night.

Maxx Aiken and Alexander Vander Hoff got the night started right for Greensboro with two goals in the first 5:32 of the game. The Quakers turned the table on The Pride from there, running off the final four goals of the period to take a 4-2 lead.

The run would prove to be decisive as Greensboro and Guilford battled even for the remaining three periods.

The Quakers would open the scoring in the second period, with their fifth unanswered goal at the 8:46 mark. Denis Radcliffe and Jaeger Carlyle would put up two goals for The Pride, sandwiched around a Guilford goal, to send the game into halftime at 6-4.

Aiken pulled Greensboro to within 6-5 in the third with an unassisted goal at the 8:10 point. The Quakers had an answer again though, scoring with 11 seconds remaining in the frame to extend the lead to 7-5.

The Pride deficit would grow to 8-5 early in the fourth before Carlyle brought Greensboro back to within 8-6 with 11:54 to play. A Guilford goal 1:45 later, followed by a quick man-up response by Carlyle left the margin at 9-7 with 9:36 to go.

The Quakers continued to make The Pride’s comeback attempt more difficult, scoring again with 8:53 on the clock to go up 10-7.

Ryan Kissner would provide the final goal of the night and Greensboro was unable to convert opportunities down the stretch, falling by a final count of 10-8.

The Pride fired 42 shots for the game compared to 29 for the Quakers. Greensboro also won the ground ball category 38-32 and the faceoff category 15-4.

Carlyle paced The Pride attack with three goals, followed by Aiken with two. Scott Showalterdished out a team high two assists. Defensively, Tracey Armstrong caused a team best two turnovers.

Greensboro will look to get its first win on Saturday at Virginia Wesleyan. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
