College Softball Finals – Guilford 6-4, William Peace 2-3

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s softball team earned a 6-2 win in the first game of the doubleheader against William Peace University. The Quakers held off a Pacers’ rally in game two to win 4-3 in a six-inning game called due to darkness late Wednesday afternoon.

In the opener, rookie Maggie Shaffer (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) fanned eight batters in a complete-game effort. She took a shutout into the sixth inning before William Peace scored twice with two out in the top of the seventh. Shaffer scattered two runs on seven hits in her collegiate debut. She also helped her cause with an RBI double in the fourth inning.

Sarah Cutright (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) went three-for-three with a RBI and a double. Cutright put the Quakers on the board in the bottom of the first with a single to right field.

Freshman Calli Pastor (Newburg, Pa./Big Spring) gave Guilford a 2-0 lead in the second when she homered to center field on her first college pitch in the bottom of the second inning.

The Quakers (2-0) jumped on William Peace (0-7-1) in the first inning of game two when Brittany Donathan (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) brought one run across with an RBI single to right field, forcing a throwing error that scored a second run.

Cutright continued her perfect day at the plate with a home run to center field in the third inning to open a 3-0 lead. She finished the day four-for-four over the two games.

The Pacers loaded the bases after scoring one more run in the top of the sixth before Casey Snead (Ellerbe, N.C./Richmond Senior) struck out the Pacers’ Heather Dindinger to end the game in the sixth inning due to darkness.

Morgan Myers (Winston-Salem, N.C./Parkland) earned the win for the Quakers. She struck out five and yielded two earned runs in four and two-thirds innings. Snead earned her first collegiate save, throwing the final inning and a third.

The Quakers return to action Sunday against Gwynedd-Mercy College at 1 PM.
