HPU Women’s Lacrosse Takes Road Loss to Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The High Point University women’s lacrosse team took a 15-6 loss to Navy on Friday afternoon in Annapolis, Md. The Panthers’ offense was led by sophomore Kendyl Gardner, who scored three times, and junior Mackenzie Carroll, who had a goal and two assists.

“We’re really disappointed in this loss,” said HPU head coach Lyndsey Boswell. “I felt like we had a good chance and were prepared going into this game. But clearly we have a lot of work to do to get ready for Sunday and the rest of the season.”

Gardner and Carroll also collected three ground balls a piece. Freshman Lila Mastroberti had six draw controls and junior Sara Kuhlman had a goal and four draw controls. Senior goalie Anna Wallingford made 11 saves and had three ground balls.

Navy was led by Loren Generi’s five-goal effort. Jasmin DePompeo had four goals and three assists and Kathy Young notched a hat trick with six draw controls. Annie Foky made 11 saves in the cage.

Gardner scored HPU’s first two goals as well as the team’s first goal of the second half. With HPU trailing 2-0, Gardner scored on a free-position shot with 21:06 left in the first half. Her second score came on an assist from Carroll, making it 4-2 with 11:52 left in the first half.

Navy went on a four-goal run in a span of less than four minutes that made it 8-2 with 5:42 left in the first half. The Panthers never got closer than four after that.

After Kuhlman and Carroll scored for the Panthers to make it 8-4, Generi scored three goals in a row. She scored in the final seconds of the first half and scored the first two goals of the second half. Young’s second strike made it 12-4 with just under 20 minutes left in the game.

Junior midfielder Alec Perry scored a free-position goal with 4:09 left, upping her scoring streak to three games. HPU fell to 1-2 overall while Navy improved to 3-0.

The Panthers will look to get back to .500 on Sunday when they take on American University at 11 a.m. in Washington, D.C. It’s the first meeting between the two schools.
