WINSTON SALEM, N.C. – Highlighted by Louise Prevoteau capturing the pentathlon title and Sydney Griffin claiming the 60-meter hurdles crown, the Elon women’s track and field team tied its best finish ever at the Southern Conference Indoor Championships coming in fourth on the overall standings with 81 points.
“It’s always great to have the girls that came through and to be named conference champs like Louise and Sydney,” said Phoenix head coach Mark Elliston. “We had some really great performances this weekend. We’re pleased with how we did; we were coming in hoping for a top-three spot, but we improved from last year.”
Day One
Prevoteau claimed her second-consecutive women’s pentathlon title, totaling 3,711 points, shattering her previous school record. Prevoteau finished second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.99. She posted a leap of 5’5” (1.65m) in the high jump and set a mark of 32’4.25” (9.86m) in the shot put. The reigning SoCon champion’s long jump mark was 18’3.25” (5.57m) followed by a first place finish in the 800-meters with a time of 2:24.42.
In the 3,000 meter run, Allyson Oram set a new school record by crossing the line under the 10-minute mark with a time of 9:58.03 and was fourth overall. Tereza Novotna earned a spot on the league’s All-Freshman team after finishing 10th with a time of 10:17.55.
Joining Novotna on the All-Freshman team on the first day was Megan Kirschling, who cleared the bar at 5’7” (1.72m) as the runner-up in the high jump. Prevoteau and Haley Laird joined Kirschling in the top-10 of the event as both cleared the bar at 5’3.75” (1.62m).
Prevoteau finished fourth overall in the long jump with a mark of 18’5” (5.61m). Marie Borowycz jumped a distance of 16’8.75” (5.10m) and was placed on the SoCon’s All-Freshman team.
Charlise Morgan was just edged out for the shot put title as the junior threw a distance of 46’9.5” (14.28m), just .02m from the top spot. Kimberlyn Holt had a heave of 42’5.5” to finish eighth.
Day Two
On day two, Griffin stood out as the freshman took home the 60-meter hurdles title with a time of 8.65, just shy of her school record she set a week ago. The Marietta, Ga., native had an impressive day overall as she fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.07, second fastest in school history. Griffin was able to earn SoCon All-Freshman honors in both events.
Bria Bell was the runner-up in the 400-meter run with a time of 57.14, a new personal-best. Jennifer Pash joined Bell in the top-five of the race with a time of 58.84 and joined Griffin on the league’s All-Freshmen team on day two.
Morgan set a new school record in the weight throw, just a week after teammate Holt broke her previous mark at the Virginia Tech Challenge. Morgan had a toss of 53’8.5” (16.37m) to set a new personal-record and finish in the top-five overall. Holt threw a distance of 52’2.75” to finish seventh.
In the one-mile run, Jenny Gallagher was the top finisher for the maroon and gold in the race with a time of 5:10.87 and finished in the top-10. Caroline McCaslin ran a time of 5:11.40 and made the All-Freshman team.
Oram was eighth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:43.49. Janelle McNeil was the top finisher for Elon in the triple jump after a mark of 36’7.75” (11.17m) and seventh overall.
Elon will take a brief break before transitioning to outdoor competition on March 8, at the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
