Greensboro College Baseball Suffers Doubleheader Sweep

(GREENSBORO, N.C.) — The Pride baseball team (7-6, 3-6 USA South) dropped both games of a doubleheader to Christopher Newport (10-2-1, 8-1 USA South) on Monday. Greensboro lost the first game 8-2 and the second game 7-3.
In game one The Captains jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the second inning. The Pride cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth by scoring two runs.

Austin Catherina would get the inning going with a single to the right side. Matthew Parker reached base on an error by the first baseman, moving Catherina to third. Seth Caison would load up the bases, reaching on a catcher’s interference. Steven Pfeiffer scored Parker and Catherina on a two run single to left field to make the score 3-2.

Christopher Newport would add four runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to win the game 8-2. The Pride were led by Catherina with two hits. Kyle Schmidt, James Feldmann, and Pfeiffer recorded one hit apiece. Pfeiffer recorded a game high two runs batted in.

In game two Christopher Newport again struck first with one run in the first. However, Greensboro would respond by tying the game in the first inning. Matthew Parker started it off with a double to center field. Feldmann plated Parker on an RBI single to right field to tie it at 1-1.

The Captains would take the lead back in the third inning, scoring two runs to pull ahead 3-1. Christopher Newport extended the lead to 7-1 after putting up four runs in the fifth.

Greensboro recorded a run in the sixth on an RBI single to third base by Luke Cordonnier and Kenny Graham scored the final run of the game on a wild pitch for the final score of 7-3.

In game two, Greensboro was led by six different hitters with one hit apiece. Kyle Willard and Feldmann led the way with one run batted in. Kris Peeden pitched 4.2 solid innings in relief striking out five while allowing four hits.

The Pride will be back in action at home this week against Virginia Wesleyan. The game has been tentatively moved to Wednesday, due to rain in the forecast, with a game time to be announced. Check back for more details when they become available.
