SWG Cowboys run out of rope and excellent season comes to an end:Reagan Raiders get win on Wednesday to send them to Dudley HS on Friday night for Sectional Finals

The second round of the NCHSAA State playoffs featured a matchup of the Reagan Raiders and the Cowboys of Southwest. Reagan knocked off Northwest Guilford on Monday night and Southwest put away Grimsley to earn this second round draw. It was a physical dog fight the entire first quarter with neither team really having control. After the first 8 it was 14-11 in favor of the Raiders. The second quarter was just as slow paced as the opening but this time the Cowboys were able to get some control, out scoring the Raiders 12-6 and taking a 23-20 headed into the break. The battle continued as the second half opened up. After trading several baskets, Southwest got into a rhythm and got up 33-27 at the 4:31mark. But Reagan kept battling back and eventually tied it and took the lead 40-37 with back to back three pointers with 1:45 to go I the frame. The Raiders pushed it to 45-41 but a deep three by Terrell Leach just at the buzzer cut it to 45-44 going into the final stanza. The drama continued to build in the fourth as Reagan tried to pull away, but the Cowboys showed grit by scoring 5 straight to tie the game at 56 with 2:42 left in the ball game. On the ensuing possession, the Cowboys forced a turnover and came down in transition. A missed jumper and an offensive rebound gave Ben Ferguson an open three pointer to give the Cowboys the 59-56 lead with 2:07 to play. Neither team scored again until under a minute to play when Reagan got a basket with 58 seconds left. After a Cowboys miss Reagan came down and missed a jumper and there was a scramble for the rebound. A blown call by the offical gave posession to the Raiders on the out of bounds play. Reagan was able to score on that posession with 24.6 seconds left in the game to take the lead 60-59. Southwest came down and was unable to score and had to foul. The Raiders went 1-2 from the stripe and the Cowboys called timeout down 61-59. After the timeout the Cowboys ran their set but was unable to convert. A pair of Reagan free-throws took the game to it’s final tally at 63-59. The Raiders will move on to face Dudley on Friday night. Southwest had a remarkable run at 27-0 before finally falling here in the playoffs. Reagan was led by Evan Peatross and Jake Hobson with 13 apeice. The Cowboys were led by Terrell Leach (20, 7Reb, 3 Stl), and Ben Ferguson (12, 3 Reb). Thank you to the students, staff, and parents for all the love and support that was shown for these young men this season.

  1. Congrats to Terrell Leach on a fantastic career and season..He will go to the next level..For the SW team to rise to the top, they need to play as a “team”..Their is no “I” in team…Terrell must have taken them as far as he could…Great to see this kind on basketball in this area this season..Man, was it exciting to see triad teams this good…We had some of the best teams/players/coaches in the state right here in the piedmont…Fun to watch….

  2. What a season for Terrell Leach. I love/loved watching him play! He is truly a blessed basketball player. SW had a great team and they were so unselfish. Leach could have scored 50 points a game (and I think he had a few games scoring that many or close) but he passed the ball as many times as he scored to allow others to score. Terrell Leach and SW team…yall’ were great fun to watch!
