The seedings for the VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Tournament were announced on Saturday. The High Point University men’s basketball team is the No. 1 seed in the North Division and will face either Coastal Carolina or Liberty Thursday at 8 p.m. The women’s basketball team earned the No. 4 seed and will face No. 5 Campbell on Friday at 6 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
The men’s basketball team won the North Division – the Panthers’ first-ever Big South title in men’s basketball – with a 12-4 league record and earned a bye in the first round. The Panthers will play at 8 p.m. on Thursday against the winner of Tuesday’s first-round game between Coastal Carolina and Liberty.
HPU beat Coastal Carolina 74-62 at the Millis Center in the teams only meeting this season. The Panthers beat Liberty twice this year, including a 77-72 double-overtime victory at the Millis Center.
The Panthers are 10-11 all-time in the Big South Tournament. HPU is 1-0 against Coastal Carolina in championship play with a 59-56 win over the Chanticleers in 2008. HPU is 1-1 against Liberty in the Big South Tournament with the team’s win coming in the 2011 quarterfinals.
The women’s basketball team clinched the No. 4 seed and a bye in the first round of the tournament with a 58-53 win over Coastal Carolina on Saturday. The Panthers will face No. 5 Campbell on Friday at 6 p.m. in the third quarterfinal game.
High Point and Campbell split the regular season series, with each team winning at home. The Panthers fell in Buies Creek, N.C., 79-76, on Jan. 12 and picked up a 79-57 win at the Millis Center on Feb. 28. This is the first-ever meeting between HPU and Campbell in the Big South Tournament.
High Point is the only school to earn a first-round bye for both the men’s and women’s teams.
