College Men’s Lacrosse Final – DeSales 11, Guilford 10 (ot)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – James Guerrier’s unassisted goal 2:59 into overtime lifted visiting DeSales University to an 11-10 lacrosse win over Guilford College Sunday.

The Bulldogs (1-0) scored the game’s final three goals, including the game-tying score with 39 seconds left in regulation, to win their season opener.
The evenly played contest featured eight ties and three lead changes. Guilford (2-2) held the game’s only two-goal advantage after Nick Mann scored from Adam Fiore with 3:19 left in regulation, which opened a 10-8 margin.

The cushion did not last long as DeSales’ Ryan Loughlin tallied from Jared Wiedow at the 1:57 mark of the fourth quarter, which brought the Bulldogs back to within 10-9. DeSales’ Brennan Gmeiner won the ensuing face-off, but the Bulldogs turned the ball over. Guilford returned the favor and DeSales called timeout with 65 seconds left. The Bulldogs got the ball to Wiedow, who worked free for his second goal of the game with 39 seconds left to tie the score at 10-10.

DeSales’ Loughlin shared game-high honors with three goals on the day. Guerrier and Wiedow both tallied twice and added one assist. Chalie Wilmer contributed a goal and two assists for the Bulldogs. Gmeiner won 16-of-24 face-offs and collected a game-high six ground balls, which helped DeSales withstand 31 turnovers. Freshman goalie Matt Warnken was solid in his college debut with 12 saves.

Guilford’s Duncan Fitzgerald and Henry Farley both scored three goals. Rookie Adam Fiore notched a game-best five points on a goal and four assists. Juquan Tellis paced the home team with five ground balls. Jacob Broome stopped six shots in goal, including one in overtime.

Guilford is back in action Saturday (3/9) when it hosts the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at 1:00 p.m.
