Elon Phoenix Women’s Basketball Closes Out Regular Season in Statesboro Monday

ELON, N.C. – The Elon women’s basketball team (16-12, 13-6) will close the gap on the 2012-13 regular season after a game at Georgia Southern (7-21, 6-13) in Statesboro, Ga., on Monday, March 4. Tip is set for 7 p.m. in Hanner Fieldhouse.

Last Time Out
The Phoenix claimed a 72-56 win over Davidson in front of a record crowd of 1,123 in Alumni Gym on Saturday. A 26-11 run in the second half helped Elon top the Wildcats as did a game-high 23 points from Ali Ford. Zora Stephenson provided an electrifying spark off the bench, going 4-of-5 from three-point range to finish with 12 points.

Scouting the Eagles
Georgia Southern is coming off a 67-53 win over UNCG Saturday. Senior Meredyth Frye scored a season-high 26 points in the game as GSU shot a season-high 55 percent. MiMi Dubose is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 12.9 points per game. Anna Claire Knight and Frye also average in double figures with 10.9 and 10.8 points/game, respectively.

The Series
GSU owns the all-time series with a 12-8 record, however, Elon has won four of the last five games, including the last three contests. The two teams met earlier this season when Elon claimed a 70-59 win in Alumni Gym on Jan. 28. Kelsey Evans (20 points, 12 boards) and Kelsey Harris (10 points, 11 boards) both recorded double-doubles, while Ali Ford scored a game-high 23 points.

Record Crowd

Alumni Gym saw its biggest crowd in history for a women’s basketball game on Saturday when Elon took on Davidson. The 1,123 people present for the win topped the record set two years ago when the Phoenix played Samford on Feb. 19, 2011, in front of 1,071 fans.

Looking Ahead
Next up for Elon is the 2013 SoCon Basketball Tournament in Asheville, N.C. The Phoenix will play its first game on Saturday, March 9, with the time and opponent still to be determined.
