Bruce Hornsby’s son(UNC-A) and Xavier McDaniel’s daughter(UNC-CH):Their basketball roots run deep[‘Z’ and ‘X’ in town this week]/McDaniel ACC Rookie of the Year!

Bruce Hornsby’s son Keith is on the basketball court for the UNC Asheville Bulldogs and headed to the Big South Tournament this week and they will play the Longwood Lancers in Round One….

Last year Keith Hornsby shot 63.6% from the foul line and this season he is up to 93% at the charity stripe and he is #2 in the nation for NCAA free throw shooting….Not bad for a kid whose dad has been ‘Back in the High Life Again’ many times over the years and standing at 6’4 and at age 58, Bruce played in the New York Summer Leagues in 2012, just to test his late-life hoop skills…

Interesting read on Keith Hornsby and his dad Bruce, from ‘Bruce Hornsby and the Range’, when you CLICK HERE….(Scott Fowler-Charlotte Observer)
*****63.6% at the free throw line and now 93% this season, going 93-100, that kid Keith is really shooting some free throws now….*****

Xylina McDaniel, Xavier McDaniel’s daughter, plays a lot like dad did back in the day, tough all over the basketball court….Xylina and her UNC-CH Tar Heels will be in town(Greensboro) this week for the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum and you should expect to see Xavier McDaniel, known well for days with the Seattle Supersonics, in the crowd at the Greensboro Coliseum…

Xavier McDaniel attends almost all of his daughter’s college games…He is her coach, he made her what she is today….Xylina, who goes by ‘Z’, says her dad, who always went by ‘X’, is her extended coach….Xylina(‘Z’) says, “I am my father’s daughter”….

Now more on Xylina McDaniel from www.theacc.com:

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina freshman forward Xylina McDaniel has been voted the 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Year by both the Blue Ribbon Panel and by the league’s head coaches, and leads this year’s ACC All-Freshmen team, as announced today by ACC Commissioner John Swofford.

McDaniel was chosen by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel, which consists of national and local media members, as well as school representatives, while the Head Coaches Honors consist of votes from the league’s head coaches. She is the seventh Tar Heel to garner Rookie of the Year honors and first since Camille Little did so in 2004.

A native of Columbia, S.C., McDaniel led all ACC rookies with 12.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. McDaniel earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors a league leading six times, while helping the Tar Heels to a 26-5 overall mark and the third seed in the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament with a 14-4 record. McDaniel was also named to the All-ACC First Team as selected by the head coaches.

A quartet of guards, including Alexis Jones, a three-time ACC Rookie of the Week selection who took over point guard duties when the Blue Devils lost Chelsea Gray to injury, joined McDaniel on the ACC All-Freshman Team. Jones gives Duke an All-Freshman Team selection for the fourth straight season. Boston College’s Nicole Boudreau who started in all 29 games and contributed 11.2 points per game, is the first Eagle to earn All-Freshman Team honors since Carolyn Swords and Stephanie Murphy were both named in 2008.

Chloe Pavlech gave the Terrapins their 19th All-Freshman team selection in program history, while Brittany Jackson follows her back-court mates Tyaunna Marshall and Sydney Wallace to give Georgia Tech All-Freshman Team honorees three consecutive seasons.

Four student-athletes who were selected by the Blue Ribbon Panel also earned All-ACC FreshmanTeam recognition as chosen by the head coaches. In addition to Boudreau, Jones, Jackson and McDaniel, Maryland’s Malina Howard was also selected to the Head Coaches’ All-ACC Freshman Team.
