College Women’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 19, Wittenberg 16

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior E’leyna Garcia scored a career-high 10 points on nine goals and an assist in Guilford College’s 19-16 lacrosse win over visiting Wittenberg University Wednesday.

The Quakers (3-1) withstood a furious Wittenberg rally in the second half, which saw the Tigers (1-1) trim a seven-goal deficit down to one with 9:10 left in regulation. Garcia’s seventh goal of the game opened a 15-8 Guilford lead with 22:36 left before Wittenberg roared back with a 7-1 run. Alie Marousek scored three goals and an assist during the spurt, including two man-down scores. Teammate Francine Murzynski tallied two of her team-best six goals, including an unassisted marker that drew Wittenberg to within 16-15.

The Tigers won the ensuing draw control and had three separate possessions trailing by one, but could not get the equalizer. Guilford goalie Liza Mettler stopped a Marousek shot at the 7:39 mark to preserve the lead. Quakers’ rookie Marina Bailey ended a nearly eight-minute scoring draught with her second goal of the day, which restored a 17-15 Guilford margin. Garcia netted her ninth goal with 3:37 left as Guilford scored three of the match’s final four scores.

Garcia, the reigning Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Player of the Week, missed her own school record for goals in a game, set last week in the Quakers’ Feb. 28 win at Greensboro College. Her nine goals versus Wittenberg match the former mark set by Julie Sullivan ’93 in 1993. Garcia’s 10 points stand second all-time at Guilford only to Mary Hutchins’ ’08 11 points scored against the College of Wooster in 2007.

Guilford sophomore Eleanora Keene netted four goals and picked up 12 key draw controls, matching the second-highest total in school history. She also had four ground balls and caused a game-high four turnovers. Junior Lily Colley contributed six points with two goals and four assists. Her twin sister, Becca, was solid with two goals, one assist, a career-high eight ground balls and four caused turnovers. Senior netminder Liza Mettler made nine saves between the pipes.

Wittenberg’s Murzynski added an assist for seven points in the game. She also picked up a team-best five draws and four ground balls. Marousek finished with six points on four goals and two assists. Sophomore Logan Warye scored three goals and an assist for Wittenberg . Senior goalie Katie Bondy had seven saves and three ground balls.

The Quakers return to action Saturday (3/9) when they open Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at Sweet Briar College.
