GC Softball Stays Perfect in USA South With Sweep of Mary Baldwin

The Pride softball team (8-5 overall, 4-0 USA South) earned a doubleheader sweep of Mary Baldwin (0-8 overall, 0-2 USA South) at home on Saturday afternoon. Greensboro

Sarah Connolly put The Pride on the board in the second inning with a two run blast to left field for the early lead. Alexis Hall added to the lead in the fourth with an RBI double to left that scored Connolly and made the score 3-0.

Greensboro broke the game open in the fifth with five runs to extend the advantage to 7-0. Connolly was back to work with a two run single up the middle. The Pride would tack on the final two runs of the frame with the help of a Fighting Squirrell error.

Riding the momentum, The Pride ended the game in the sixth on a walk-off single down the left field line by Sarah Thompkins.

Greensboro outhit Mary Baldwin 12-2 and played a spotless game in the field, while the Fighting Squirrels committed two errors.

Alexis Hall finished with a game high three hits in four at-bats for The Pride. Chipping in two hits apiece were Chelsea Brewer, Reihle Kash, Thompkins and Connolly. Connolly also contributed four RBI and scored three runs.

Shelby Drummonds earned her second win in the pitching circle with a complete game two hitter. Drummonds fanned nine Mary Baldwin hitters.

The Fighting Squirrels took their lone lead of the day with a single run in the top of the first inning to kick off game two. The lead did not last for long though, as Greensboro exploded for five runs in the first, four in the second, six in the third and one in the fourth to run away with the 16-1 win.

The Pride pounded out their six first inning runs on five hits, highlighted by RBI base hits by Jackie Nicholson, Taylor Freeman and Rae Hall.

Greensboro continued to roll in the second with four runs on five hits. Thompkins knocked home the first two runs on a double to left field. Senior Hannah Pennell knocked home the final two runs on a double to right, recording her first career hit in her first career at-bat in the process.

The third inning featured a six run, six hit attack with Nicholson, Kash, Thompkins, Connolly and Rae Hall each plating runs.

The Pride finished the game with 19 hits and no errors in the field, while Mary Baldwin totaled six hits and committed three errors.

Nicholson, Freeman and Thompkins each posted a game high three hits. Also posting multiple hits were Brewer, Kash and Connolly with two. Thompkins led the team with four RBI, while Nicholson and Rae both drove in three runs.

Earning her first college win in the circle was Dawn Harris. Harris worked a complete game, allowing one run on six hits.

Greensboro will be in action again on Monday for day one of two at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, FL.
