HPU Men’s Golf: McKay Tye Leads Bash at the Beach After First Round

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Freshman McKay Tye shot a six-under 65 to lead the High Point University men’s golf team at the first round of the Bash at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Tye is the individual leader and the Panthers are fourth out of 11 teams.

“We played really well today,” said head coach Greg Flesher. “McKay Tye shot a career-best 65 today. He had his best putting round as a collegiate golfer and kept the ball in play off the tee. Charles Valluzzo shot a one-over 72 thanks to a strong short game. It was great to have all five guys in the 70’s today. We will need to keep our focus on playing one shot at a time heading in to tomorrow.”

Tye shot his best round of collegiate golf, scoring in the 60’s for the first time. He finished the day six-under, two strokes ahead of Rich Leeper from James Madison for the individual lead.

Sophomore Charles Valluzzo carded a 72 in the first round to finish one-over par and finished tied for 15th in the tournament. It is Valluzzo’s lowest round of the spring season after he went 73-76-74 last week at the Charleston Shootout.

Senior Chase Wilson finished two strokes behind Valluzzo with a 74 for the day. Sophomore LJ Georgetti carded a 77 and freshman Tommy Dillon shot a 78 for the Panthers.

The Panthers sit fourth in the tournament with a cumulative score of 288. Big South foe Radford is in first place with a score of 281.

The Bash at the Beach continues on Monday at the Surf Golf and Beach Blub in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The first group will tee-off at 8 a.m.
