Greensboro College Women’s Lacrosse Earns First Win Against NC Wesleyan

(ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.) — The Greensboro College women’s lacrosse team (1-7 overall, 1-0 USA South) picked up its first win of the season on Wednesday, beating North Carolina Wesleyan (0-6 overall, 0-3 USA South) 20-8. Brittany Ziobro spearheaded the attack, scoring seven goals in the win.

The Pride rolled with the help of a big first half, outscoring the Battling Bishops 13-2 in the period. Greensboro took a 2-0 1:49 into the game following goals by Kirstin Norris and Ziobro.

After the Battling Bishops added their first goal at the 27:09 mark to cut the gap to 2-1, The Pride took off on a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 9-1 with 7:53 left in the half. Nadya Fedun jumpstarted the spurt with her first of two goals in the stretch. Ziobro added three goals and an assist, Amira Khatib contributed one, and Micaela Sandoval scored the final goal.

North Carolina Wesleyan briefly slowed the run with a goal with 6:53 to go, but could not stop the momentum, as Greensboro scored the final four goals to go into the break with a 13-2 advantage. Kayla Gonzalez assisted the effort with two goals, while Khatib and Alexa Beschalso found net.

The Battling Bishops would get no closer then 14-5 in the second half, as The Pride scored four unanswered goals in a 6:46 span midway through the period to put the game away. Jordan Balasus and Ziobro would score three times apiece in the second. Fedun also chipped in her third and final goal of the day.

In addition to the scoring, Fedun led Greensboro with three assists. Sandoval and Ziobro dished out two assists apiece, with Gonzalez, Norris and Balasus joining the fun with one each.

The Pride won the shot count 28-17, came away with 17 of the 30 draw controls, and picked up 19 ground balls compared to 14 for North Carolina Wesleyan. Defensively, Greensboro forced 17 Battling Bishop turnovers, with Gonzalez and Leah Holle both posting a team best two.

Kaleigh Hemstock was victorious in goal, posting a complete game five save effort.

Next up for The Pride is a home date with USA South rival Christopher Newport. Game time is set for 1 p.m. on Pride Field.
