Should Greensboro be the permanent home for the ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament?

A good question of the day…..

Should Greensboro be the permanent home for the ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament?

What do you say, and if Coach K had his way, it would be here to stay….Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski says, “I love Greensboro”….

Should the men’s tournament make its permanent home in Greenboro? The ACC women have pretty much locked down Greensboro, as their home for their tournament….

Do you think the men ought to move around or just stay in their hometown??? Greensboro is home to the ACC central offices….

‘Tournament Town’ every year for the ACC Men???

Coach K for the next ACC commissioner???

Read today’s N&R feature from David Morrison to learn more, on why the ACC needs to be in Greensboro all of the time, according to future ACC commissioner Mike Krzyzewski……

  1. I think that would be a bad idea. With all of the teams coming from the old Big East, you need to keep those fans interested in basketball. If you make this a Greensboro-only game, this would create a marketing issue for the old Big-East people. It is not a stretch that the Old Big-east teams could go back if things dont work out for them from a TV/Marketing perspective. Most people would want the ACC to stay here because they would be able to get “comps” and other thigns from the ACC, but if you move it to say my old stomping grounds Maryalnd/DC area then the fans around here may not be able to enjoy the things that come with the ACC tournament being held in Greensboro/Charlotte. What if the ACC tournament was held in Madison Square Garden, or The Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, TD Garden in Boston, or the Verizon Center in Washington. Think about the exposure the ACC would get. Think about what it would do to recruiting. What would happen if the ACC tournament were played in TD Garden in Boston and player from the Boston area saw the game?
The reasons that that these teams starting moving around so much had to do with marketing, and money. Keeping the tournament in Greensboro would not do much for the ACC and its reputation. I am quite sure if the officials in New York, and Boston would host the ACC, I am sure Mr. Swofford and the ACC would benefit greatly. $$$$

  2. Yes please Greensboro every year and no way New York City….

Jay Bilas from ESPN doesn’t know what he is talking about and he is a Duke guy.

    What do they know?

Keep the Tournament in Greensboro every year. The people at the Coliseum do such a good job as hosts.

    Keep it here!!!!!!!!

    New York, oh please NO!!!!!!

  4. The New York City people are mean and the Greensboro host people have always been real nice.

I once nearly got thrown to the ground up New York City and you think I am going back?

NO way man! I will never go back there.

Greensboro should be the permanent home of the ACC Tournament.

    It is all about Greensboro!

Other people might be mad but I will not support the ACC Tournament in New York City and I feel there are others out there just like me and my family.

    GO Greensboro and STAY ACC!!!!!!

  5. I would like to see the tournament back in Atlanta a few more times.

New York City has the Big East and let them keep it.

Don’t take the ACC out of the South. Look what happened when they did that with NASCAR. It ran off of the road and has never made it back up on top. Take a lesson from Russ Francis, Gene Francis or Bill Francis, aka whatever his name is and leave the ACC in the South.

The ACC should not go the way of NASCAR. Stay in the South.

  6. This is the HQ of the ACC and neutral territory (although the N&R does it’s best to make people think it’s Carolina only).

These new schools coming in knew this when they joined. So asking for the tournament to be in their backyard is just ridiculous.

Keep it in Greensboro. Teams don’t like it, let them go to another conference. But they will be leaving THE best basketball conference, hands down.

Recruiting would not be impacted by sending the ACC tournament away. Do that for tier III leagues like MEAC or Atlantic 10 or Patriot League.

  7. We got the best BBQ around keep it at Stamey’s and play basketball at the Greensboro Coliseum.ACC here to stay and a large plate with hushpuppys and fries to go.

    Eat more BBQ.

  8. Guys, you need to get out of the 1960’s. No one cares about Stamey’s food or NASCAR. Sports, especially college sports, is all about big money. All you have to do is look at what Maryland did. The Terps were one of the original Dixie Conference members, but they left. Wanda, just because someone knocked you down in New York does not mean all of the pople there are bad. Someone called me “Himey” one day, but do you think I will leave the Triad area, NO. I am sure the powers that be are not worried about me or you.Decisions about sports in the future will not take any regional feelings into consideration. People with money make decisions in sports. And Hey TED, those people who are making decisions in sports will not eat at Stamey’s, trust me. The networks have a lot of say so when it comes down to what is played where and why. Markets have to be taken into consideration. Also, you have to consider what happens down the road with all of this expansion. 10-15 years from now the ACC may not even be in existence. Football will come to dominate the TV landscape.Competitive relationships between schools will dominate the conversation. Take it from me, Greensboro is a good place to work, live, and raise your kids. As far as the ACC is concerned the ambiance may not even be the issue anymore. We now have members whom have national reputations and Mr. Swofford and others will reach out to people who support those members to keep them happy and engaged. Boston ,Connecticut, and Syracuse.

  9. oppenheimerfund : come back to reality or maybe step into it.

Why would the ACC change it’s formula for success? Rotating to a few cities but always coming back to Greensboro, it’s HQ.

As for your claims and backing them up with “trust me”. No reason to trust you.

You act like you’re part of the supposed “Powers that be” . You’re not. Stop pretending. If you were, you wouldn’t trying to be throwing money away.

  10. Based solely on geographical purposes, I think the G makes the most sense. However, when money gets involved it’s not hard to see why the Tourney could end up in NY. I really hope the Tourney will stay in Greensboro. Growing up here, Friday of the tournament is always special. I think if you move the tournament elsewhere it loses it’s aura. In NY or ATL, the tournament is just another attraction. But in Greensboro it is THE attraction. From the history surrounding the ACC and the coliseum to the atmosphere it generates around the city, the ACC tournament belongs in Greensboro.

  11. Look no further than what became of Nascar when they started chasing the money only. I for one think an exciting sport now has become vanilla, generic, cold, and just plain uninteresting.

Reaching all the way up to Boston College did nothing to bring money or fans to the ACC. So what if Boston Rob Roundball gets recruited because he got to see an ACC Tourney in Beantown. There are plenty of recruits in the South without watering down the entire conference.

Lure South Carolina back in the fold and chase Georgia to strenghten our football reputation. ND baseketball is not much of a win for the ACC. Virginia is as far north as the conference should go and the tourney should never leave Greensboro.

  12. NY should be treated just like the ATL, Bos, Tampa and DC when it comes to the tournament. Let them get it in rotating but Greensboro is the only logical home. Other than Greensboro, Charlotte is the only other neutral location. Greensboro has more seating (excepting ATL), more extras such as the fan zones and special event areas. Yes- in NY you can walk to the game from your hotel and find good food within a short walk and I am sure the NY experience would be good for someone that has never been to a city as such. However, in Greensboro the same Wed-Sun trip (excluding the games tkts) will cost you less than $1200 but in NY it will cost you $2000-3000 for the same level of food, hotel and parking. Here you can drive any where within 15 minutes but in NY you will not drive any where and you can’t get any where else within 1 hour. In Greensboro you can get into the games via parking lot sales – especially when a “big” team loses but in NY no one will just walk up waiting for tickets. It will be the tournament of the rich and well to do only.

Here the game is treated like a royal wedding but in NY it will only be the favor of the day. Here it is the game that a family can attend for both men and women but in NY its a trip for individuals, couples and company executives.

Someone said it would help recruit – please. If you are playing at the ACC level, then the tournament could be in Spain and it would not make a difference. The ACC has been the best presented, money making and the granddad of them all for nearly 40 years. Who cares of NY has all the media? The last that I checked – TV cares about stories, good play on the court and good teams. Whether the tournament is in Greensboro, NY or downtown Mebane, it will be the best tournament in the country if they don’t start watering it down to satify the mega rich.

Don’t start chasing the money only or you will lose your identity and lose your place on the map. Nobody will match the SEC in football within the next decade but we also need to make sure nobody matchs us in basketball or we will start getting cherry picked like the Big East.

  13. Let me clarify something…I never said the ACC tournament should not be held in Greensboro. I only tried to say that due to expansion, the tournament will have to alternate from place to place. But we all have to look at this not from a fan’s perspective, but from a business perspective. People who make decisions in sports today are business-minded.

Guys, let’s face it…Sports are now big business. Why do you think the ACC reached out to Boston College, Syracuse, and Connecticut? It all had to do with markets. That is why you “may” see the tournament rotate to a Northern city.

Vanguard..I dont know what you are talking about, but I never claimed to be a “powers that be”, but I am a business man that travels and I talk to people in business. Also, it is not hard to see where college sports is heading…all you have to do is pick up a newspaper or search the internet for a story that deal with expansion. Also, find out how many business people are conference presidents or commissioners. I love ACC basketball, but my love for the sport will never change where the tournament is played.

Off the subject for a moment….I hate the fact that Notre Dame is coming to our conference. We are doing more for them, than they are doing for us. Over the last 10 years we have produced more competitive football teams nationally than Notre Dame has. They will be with us for a while, but they will leave when the next attractive Super-Conference avails itself….

But it will not be personal…JUST BUSINESS

  14. You have touched on a very good and very strong point….

Sports is becoming more and more, a VERY BIG BUSINESS and it has gone from the pros to college and high school sports is leaning that way too…

There is such a battle for the dollar these days and colleges are figuring out more and more ways to increase and stretch that dolla…

The money is talking and some are riding in ‘Style’ while others are finding it hard to walk and chew used up gum at the same time…

It has become survive and advance and it is more and more like ‘Survival of the Fittest’ each and every day….

Would not be surprised at all to see Notre Dame bolt after a few years if a new or another SuperConference comes calling….

Key an eye on the ink, it may never get completely dry……

And have all of these Conferences outgrown each other and become too big for their own good???

Lots of questions still be answered out here….

Maybe one day the ACC Tournament will be in LA or in Dallas or Chicago….

Who will be the highest bidder and what really is your market any more???

You can’t stay at home when they are offering you more to come to their city…..

Who will be the highest bidder and one day do you have to go back and start all over again???

A good case that even Everett Case could not explain/understand…

  15. You are right. I continue to go back to Maryland. That move to the BIG10 was very Prophetic.

  16. A few things no one is touching on:

    1) If I were a coach, I’d rather not go to a place that has as many distractions as ATL or NY.

    2) When you make money, there’s cost involved. It’s likely $500-$1000 cheaper per person to come play in Greensboro. And that’s not 10-15 players and the coach. Assistants, trainers, stats people, mascots, chearleaders, etc. Schools still have influence where they want to go play. Money may be no factor to the top dogs, but to there’s only 2-3 in the conference.

    3) Greensboro area is growing as a sports tournament destination. The Colosseum, the aquatic center, Grandover. Those are being supported by nice hotels, High Point Road getting a facelift, urban loop making it easier to get in and out.

    4) Greensboro is tournament town. When you’re a basketball player and you come to play here, you’re treated like a rock start. It’s the same effect NFL players says about playing in Green Bay. In NY, LA, ATL, DC you’re just another face in the jaded crowd.

ACC has the formula of success. Give the other cities a taste now and again. But the tournament is never gone from home for too long.

  17. If Quse’ and Pitt want to play in the Garden, they should’ve stayed in The big east. The ACC lives in Gboro. Places like Greensboro need a tourny every year to continue to grow the economy and city.
