Elon Track and Field Prep For Wake Forest Open

ELON, N.C. – The Elon track and field team travels to Winston-Salem, N.C., this weekend to compete at the Wake Forest Open. The two-day meet is scheduled to kick off on Friday, March 15, at 9:30 a.m. with the women’s hammer throw at Kentner Stadium.

Last Time Out
Elon made its 2013 outdoor debut last weekend, March 8-9, at the Coastal Carolina Invitational in Conway, S.C. The Phoenix claimed four event titles at the meet and had several performers set new outdoor school records.

Kimberlyn Holt set a new school-record and won individual medalist honors in the women’s hammer throw with a toss of 166’10” (50.86m) on the first day of the meet. The women’s 4×200-meter relay team of Sydney Griffin, Kayleigh Birks, Jennifer Pash and Simone Jackson won the event title after clocking a time of 1:41.58. Suzanne Martin broke her own school record in the javelin throw with a toss of 138’5” (42.18m) as the runner-up.

On the second day, two more records were set as freshman Megan Kirschling won the high jump title after clearing the bar at 5’7” (1.70m), a new all-time program best. Fellow frosh Griffin etched her name at the top of the 100-meter dash record book with a time of 14.13, finishing as the runner-up.

Charlise Morgan won the women’s shot put with a heave of 43’8.50” (13.32m). The 4×100-meter relay team of Birks, Griffin, Jackson and Bria Turner ran the second-fastest mark in school history with a time of 46.87 and finished second overall.

In Competition for Elon
Birks, Griffin, Jackson, Pash, Turner and Bria Bell will be amongst the group competing in the sprinting events. Pash finished in the top-10 of the 400-meters with a time of 58.71 last week at Coastal Carolina.

Griffin will also compete in hurdles with Veronica Luedke and Louise Prevoteau. Luedke garnered a top-10 standing in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.39 last week.

Birks, Holt, Martin and Morgan will represent the maroon and gold in the throwing events. Holt joined Morgan in the top-five of the shot put with a heave of 40’1.25”(12.94m) at Coastal Carolina. Morgan had a toss of 149’0” (45.41m) in the hammer throw, the second-best mark at Elon.

In distance, Elon will have a number of athletes in competition this weekend. Ellie Taff was the third runner to cross the line in the 800-meter run at CCU with a time of 2:17.43. Tereza Novotna joined Taff in the top-10 of the race with a time of 2:23.03, while Emily Tryon had a top-five performance in the 1,500-meter run, crossing line with a time of 4:42.39.

Kirschling, Prevoteau, Haley Laird and Emily Tomich are slated to compete in the high jump for Elon. Prevoteau is also scheduled in the long jump along with Marie Borowycz and Janelle McNeil. The latter pair will represent the Phoenix in the triple jump.

The duo of Melinda Hersey and Claire Smith will be the lone pole valuters in action for the Phoenix at Wake Forest.
