Washington and Lee Baseball Tallied Nine Home Runs in Series Sweep of Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Keegan Dolan, Alex Maragos and Will Salley each hit two home runs in Washington and Lee University’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) twinbill against Guilford College. The Generals captured game one, 7-2, and game two, 13-7.

Washington and Lee (9-8, 4-2 ODAC) began the game up 2-0 after a Maragos RBI single and an Alex Mait sacrifice fly to right field. Will James (1-4) stayed on the mound 2.2 innings for the Quakers (9-10, 2-5 ODAC), allowing three earned runs. A Kent Peterson single to right field was bobbled by the right fielder, putting the Quakers on the scoreboard, 5-1. Chad Waggoner relieved James but was unable to stop the Generals’ scoring run, allowing another two earned runs in his 4.1 innings. Guilford plated one more but were unable to outdo their opponents’ hot bats.

Lou Trosch (1-2) began the nightcap on the mound for the Quakers, pitching a solid two innings, until Maragos hit his second homer of the afternoon, plating three. Guilford countered with two runs in the third, decreasing Washington and Lee’s lead, 4-2. Salley hit a two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning. The Generals’ Dolan followed Salley’s lead and hit another two-run homer, retiring Trosch. Justin Morrison entered the game on the mound for the Quakers, but could not stop the home runs. Washington and Lee’s Luke Deary hit the third and final of the inning, putting the Generals up 8-3.

Guilford fought back and plated three in the seventh inning but were quickly countered by a Generals’ two-run top of the eighth. D.J. Phillips and Corey Wallace went 3-for-4.Jordan Slate and Corey Wallace hit one homer apiece. Nate Plein (3-1) took the win.

The Quakers play nonconference opponent Tufts University at McBane Field Monday, Mar. 18 at 3:00 p.m.
