GC Baseball Beats Averett to Snap Losing Skid

The Pride (10-12 overall, 5-8 USA South) baseball team beat Averett (17-7 overall, 8-5 USA South) 7-4 at home on Friday night to snap a four game losing streak.

Greensboro started fast, putting up three runs in the bottom of the second. Matthew Parker crossed home for the first run of the day on a fielder’s choice by Joshua Powell. Matt Irwin added the final two runs with a single to left field for the 3-0 lead.

The Cougars bounced back in the third with three runs of their own to knot the score at 3-3. Greensboro regained the advantage at 5-3 with two runs in the bottom half of the third.

Parker knocked in the first run on a double to center, with Jordan Powell capping the inning with an RBI double to right field.

The Pride built on their lead in the sixth and seventh innings, adding a run in each frame to extend the lead to 7-3. Steven Pfeiffer plated Jordan Powell in the sixth on a single to center, and Parker took advantage of an Averett error in the seventh to tack on a score.

The Cougars would threaten briefly in the ninth, knocking starter Alex Zapata from the game. However, Dustin Minnick came in to close out the 7-4 win for The Pride.

Greensboro outhit Averett 12-7 on the day and committed only one error, compared to four for the Cougars.

Irwin, Pfeiffer, Caison and Parker each finished the game with two hits apiece. Irwin led The Pride with two RBI, while Parker had a game best three runs scored.

Zapata earned his first collegiate win, going 8.0 strong innings. Minnick entered the game in the ninth and earned his first career save.

Greensboro and Averett will square off again on Saturday with a 2 p.m. game scheduled at Leonard Park. The Pride will honor the memory of former player Quinn Finnegan and will host their annual alumni game following the match-up with the Cougars.
