GC Softball Takes Two From Maryville; Ups Win Streak to Eight

The Greensboro College softball team (12-5 overall, 6-0 USA South) swept a home doubleheader, 2-0 and 9-1, against Maryville (0-18 overall, 0-6 USA South) on Friday, extending its win streak to eight games.

In game one, The Pride struck for two runs in the first inning and held the Scot bats at bay the remainder of the way for the 2-0 win. The scoring was provided by a two RBI single to centerfield by Reihle Kash, scoring Alex Wickham and Jackie Nicholson.

Shelby Drummonds and Kelsey Sanfilippo combined to do the rest in the pitching circle, tossing a three-hit, seven inning shut out. Sanfilippo earned the win in relief, working 4.0 innings with two hits allowed.

Greensboro outhit Maryville 6-3 with Wickham, Alexis Hall, Nicholson, Taylor Freeman, Kash and Sarah Connolly each contributing one hit apiece.

The Scots plated their only run of the day in the first inning of game two, taking an early 1-0 lead. It was all Pride from there, as Greensboro put up two runs in the first, three in the second, two in the third and one in both the fourth and sixth innings to implement the eight run mercy rule in the sixth at 9-1.

Sarah Tompkins evened the score at 1-1 in the first with a single to left field. A bases loaded walk to Sarah Connolly later in the inning drove in Freeman for the go ahead run.

Freeman opened the scoring in the second with a single to left for a 3-1 lead. The Pride added two more runs on bases loaded walks to Kash and Tompkins to push the advantage to 5-1.

Freeman was back at it in the third, with another RBI single. Greensboro again benefitted from from a bases loaded walk to take a 7-1 lead.

Chelsea Brewer pushed The Pride to the brink of enacting the mercy rule in the fourth, singling home Kierstin Mckenna. Freeman tallied the capper in the sixth, with an RBI walk-off to center.

Greensboro finished the day with a nine hit attack, while the defense limited Maryville to three hits. Freeman finished 3-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Brewer also had a solid outing with a 2-2 performance with one RBI and three runs. Tompkins tied for the game high in RBI with three.

Hannah Pennell picked up the win with five innings in the circle and one earned run allowed. Nicholson tossed a hitless sixth inning for The Pride.

Greensboro will look to continue its winning ways with a road trip to Ferrum on Sunday. The doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m.
