Elon Men’s Basketball to Face Canisius in First Round of CIT

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men’s basketball team will continue its 2012-13 season on Wednesday night, March 20, when the Phoenix heads to Buffalo, N.Y., to face the Canisius College Golden Griffins in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The game, which marks the first ever meeting between the two schools, is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Koessler Athletic Center on Canisius’ campus.

Fans can listen to the game live on the radio or online on WPCM 920 AM with Taylor Durham and Dick Stewart calling the action. The game will be broadcasted on the Time Warner Cable SportsChannel and video streamed for free at CollegeInsider.com.

Elon (21-11) accepted an invitation to the CIT on Saturday, March 16, marking the school’s first postseason appearance at the Division I level. The Southern Conference North Division champion Phoenix won 13 games in Southern Conference play this season, the most since joining the league in 2004. Elon fell to College of Charleston in the SoCon Tournament semifinals on March 10. Elon is led by fourth-year head coach Matt Matheny, who was named the 2013 SoCon Coach of the Year by the SoCon Media.

Canisius finished with an 18-13 record, including an 11-7 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Golden Griffins fell the quarterfinals of the MAAC Tournament to Iona, who gained a 15-seed in the NCAA Tournament. The postseason tournament marks the first for the Golden Griffins in 17 years. The 18 wins are the most for the program since 2000-01 and the 11 league wins are the most for the Griffs since 1998-99.
