GC Baseball Takes Series From Averett With 3-2 Win

The Pride baseball team (11-13, 6-9 USA South) defeated Averett (18-8, 9-6 USA South) 3-2 on Sunday afternoon. Greensboro fell behind early in the game but fought back behind strong pitching and key hitting to propel them to their first series victory of the season.

Averett jumped out early, posting two runs in the first inning for a 2-0 lead. The Pride answered in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the lead in half. Steven Pfeiffer hit a first pitch home run to left field to make it 2-1.

Greensboro tied the game in the fourth inning with one run. Christian Snider doubled to right field to start the inning the off. Matthew Parker brought in Snider on a ground out to second base to knot the score at 2-2.

The Pride took their first lead of the game in the seventh. Aaron Navarro started the inning reaching second base on an error by the third basemen. Joshua Powell scored Navarro on an RBI single through the right side to win the game 3-2.

John Atkins pitched six strong innings, giving up two runs on two hits in the first inning before settling down and allowing one hit though the next five innings. Kristopher Peeden got the win, throwing two shutout innings in relief with one hit allowed. Brian Robbett got the save, pitching the ninth.

Snider led the way for The Pride with two hits. Matt Irwin, Jordan Powell, Pfeiffer, Navarro, and Joshua Powell added one hit apiece. Pfeiffer, Parker, Joshua Powell each had one run batted in.

Greensboro will be back in action on Tuesday against Tufts. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 P.M. at Leonard Park.
