GC Women’s Lacrosse Beaten at Home by Christopher Newport 21-4

A strong first half propelled Christopher Newport (8-1 overall, 3-0 USA South) past The Pride women’s lacrosse team (1-8 overall, 1-1 USA South) 21-4 on Sunday afternoon.

The Captains controlled the first half, taking a 15-1 lead into the break. Alexa Besch scored the lone Greensboro goal at the 22:59 to make the score 2-1 before Christopher Newport put up the last 13 goals of the frame.

The Pride continued to battle in the second period, limiting the Captains to six scores down the stretch. Brittany Ziobro found the net with 24:51 showing on the clock for the first goal of the half for either team.

Kayla Gonzalez and Kirstin Norris would also contribute goals, keeping the half tied at 3-3 with 13:03 to go in the game. Christopher Newport hit its stride again, though, finishing the game with three unanswered goals to close out the 21-4 win.

The Captains held the advantage in the shot category 36-10. Greensboro committed 23 turnovers, while forcing 12 but won 11 of 26 draw controls.

Nadya Fedun dished out two of The Pride’s four assists, with Gonzalez and Ziobro adding one apiece. Fedun also won three draw controls. Micaela Sandoval made the start in goal and suffered the loss despite making ten saves.

Greensboro will be back in action on Wednesday at Meredith. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
