HPU’s Corey Law To Compete in College Slam Dunk Championship

HIGH POINT, N.C. — Senior forward Corey Law (Chesapeake, Va./Deep Creek HS) of the High Point University men’s basketball team won the “State Farm Dark Horse Dunker” competition, Intersport announced on Monday afternoon. Law will participate in the Denny’s Slam Dunk Competition at the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships in Atlanta on April 4 at 7 p.m. on ESPN.

The “State Farm Dark Horse Dunker” Facebook bracket was a five-week knockout competition that began with 16 under-the-radar dunkers. Fans determined the winner by voting during each round at the official Facebook page (Facebook.com/CollegeSlam). Law defeated Illinois State’s Tyler Brown in the finals. Both Law and Brown totaled more than twice as many votes in the final round as they did in the semifinals.

Law was selected for his “dynamic combination of power and elevation” shown in his submission video (http://youtu.be/vnoChPgmFtw). The official statement reads: “Law flashes the in-game ability to dunk over anyone, and on the practice court, he can close a between-the-legs jam with ease.”

Law is a 6-foot-6, 215-pound redshirt-senior forward for the Panthers. He scored 876 points (8.1 ppg) and grabbed 684 rebounds (6.3 per game) in his four seasons. Law’s 684 rebounds rank second on High Point’s NCAA Div. I rebounding list.

Before the dunk competition, the Panthers are playing in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament, starting with UC Irvine on Wednesday at 10:30 p.m. (EDT) in Irvine, Calif. The Panthers are 17-13 overall and went 12-4 in Big South play, winning the Big South North Division in 2012-13.

Two years in a row, the State Farm Dark Horse Dunker moved on to win the entire Denny’s Slam Dunk Competition. Last year, James Justice from Martin Methodist College won the 16-player Dark Horse Dunker bracket before bringing down the house in New Orleans, while Jacob Tucker of Illinois College was named the 2011 champion. Both dunkers are now members of the Harlem Globetrotters.
