RCC gets weekend sweep of Wake Tech:Loads of locals doing it for Eagles with Gunn, King, Ison, Henderson, Bowles, Gaffney, Baldwin and many more

Rockingham Community College Baseball Sweeps Wake Tech

The RCC baseball team traveled to the USA Baseball Complex in Cary this past weekend for an important 3 game conference series with in state rival Wake Tech (10-12/3-8). RCC compiled 44 hits and put up 47 runs during the 3 game set. All three games were called early due to slaughter rule. The sweep pushes RCC’s record to 16-6 overall, 10-1 in conference play and solidifies their hold on first place in Region X DII.
Houston Ison (HPC) started the series off with a bang with a leadoff homerun in the top of the first in game one. That would be the first of 17 hits in a 19-2 rout. Hunter Bowles (Glenn) was 4 for 5 with 3 RBIs and Adam Gunn (EG) collected 3 hits. Devin Gaffney (McM), Tommy King (GDS), and Sean Henderson (Parkland) had 2 hits each. Kaleb Houchins (Morehead) pitched a complete game improving his record to 3-1 on the year. He gave up 2 runs on 9 hits and struck out 9.

In game two of Saturday’s doubleheader RCC picked up right where it left off in game one banging out 9 hits and rolling to a 12-1 win. Bowles hit a towering 2 run homer to left field in the top of the first to give RCC an early lead. Ison continued his hot streak with a double and triple and 5 RBIs. Cory Cerven (South Iredell) also had 2 hits. Will Greene (RCHS) picked up the win going 4 innings allowing 1 run on 2 hits with 4 strike outs. His record is now 4-0.

RCC completed the series sweep with a 16-5 victory on Sunday. The Eagles broke open a tight 2-1 game with a 9 run fifth inning. With two outs and 2 runs already plated, Henderson and Marshall Creed (Surry Central) connected with back to back RBI singles. Gunn would also collect an RBI single in the inning and Gaffney ripped an RBI triple into the right centerfield gap. King and Andrew Brann (BYHS) both had a 3 for 5 day. Dallas Baldwin (Williams) went 5 innings allowing 4 runs on 10 hits. His record is now 3-0. Tyler Pollard (West Stokes) pitched the final two frames allowing 1 run on 2 hits.

The Eagles have won the first 4 conference series which includes 3 sweeps (Southeastern, New River, WTCC). RCC will host Anne Arundel Community College from Arnold Maryland in a Wednesday doubleheader starting at 2:30 before traveling to Elizabeth City next weekend to face College of the Albermarle in a 3 game series.
