CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Guilford College shot 295 in Friday’s first round of the 42nd annual Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate Men’s Golf Championship at the Paradise Point Golf Club.

The Quakers were one of 16 teams to play the par-72, 7,040-yard Gold Course Friday. The remaining 16 squads played the par-70, 6-120-yard Scarlet Course. The teams will swap courses Saturday and squads with the low 16 scores after 36 holes will play the Gold Course Sunday for the tournament title.

This year’s 32-team event features some of the top NCAA Division III and NAIA teams in America. Seven schools are ranked in their respective Nike Golf/Golf World coaches’ polls, including Guilford, Division III’s 11th-ranked squad.

Camp Lejeune’s entry shot 275 Friday on the Scarlet Course and posted the day’s low score. NAIA members St. Thomas University (Fla.) and Webber International University both shot 279 on the Scarlet Course and share second place. Guilford’s seven-over-par score trailed top-ranked Oglethorpe University (285) and second-ranked Methodist University (294) among teams playing the Gold Course.

The Quakers’ Drew Thompson turned in Friday’s low score on the Gold Course, a two-under-par 70. Guilford’s Noah Ratner shot 72 and shares eighth place. Nick Shedd (76), Dallas Page (77) and Travis Tolbert (79) rounded out the Quakers opening round. Marty Martinez of Camp Lejeune’s entry shot 67 and posted the low score on the Scarlet Course.
