LEXINGTON, Va. – Garrett Paglia scored three second-half goals to lift Washington and Lee University past visiting Guilford College, 9-5, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) lacrosse game Saturday.

Ranked eighth in this week’s United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division III Poll, the Generals (8-1, 2-0 ODAC) outshot Guilford, 55-19, but Quakers’ goalie Thomas Deane kept his team in the game with a career-high 24 saves.

Guilford’s Taylor Teodosio opened the game’s scoring and Chase Clausen netted the first of his two goals of the game to give the Quakers (4-4, 0-2 ODAC) a 2-1 halftime lead. The Generals outscored Guilford in the second quarter, 3-1, to take a 4-3 lead at the break. Washington and Lee held a 31-6 edge in shots at the half, but Deane kept Guilford close with 14 of his 24 saves.

Henry Farley’s extra-man goal with 6:21 left in the third quarter tied the score for the fourth time at 4-4, but the Generals answered 66 seconds later with Paglia’s unassisted tally that gave Washington and Lee a 5-4 edge.

Paglia scored an extra-man goal off a Mac Means assist five minutes into the fourth quarter and Jack Reuter tallied with 4:46 left in regulation for a 7-4 Generals’ edge, their largest of the game.

Teodosio netted his second score with 3:37 left to bring the Quakers to within 7-5, but Paglia scored his third and final goal 37 seconds later and Cameron Dabir’s second tally with 27 seconds remaining iced Washington and Lee’s fourth straight win.

Paglia added an assist in the first half and finished with a game-high four points. Jared Mitchell won 14-of-17 face-offs and scooped up seven ground balls. Joe LaSala caused four turnovers and Andrew Fusslebaugh picked up six ground balls for the Generals. Warren Berenis had five saves in goal.

Teodosio and Clause both scored twice to pace Guilford’s offense. Adam Fiore added two assists, but the story was the play of Deane, the sophomore netminder making his first start of the year after missing the start of the season with an injury. His 24 stops rank fifth in school history and are the most by a Quakers’ goalie since 2007. He also picked up three ground balls, second only to Nick Huckins’ game-high seven pickups.

Washington and Lee has never lost to Guilford in 26 meetings. The four-goal margin in today’s contest marked the closest game since the Generals’ 12-9 win in 1992.

Guilford hosts Ferrum College Saturday (3/30) at 7:00 p.m.
