HPU’s Brown A Finalist for Dunk of the Year

High Point freshman forward John Brown’s high-flying alley-oop vs. UNC Greensboro on Nov. 9 is a finalist for the Pepsi MAX Dunk of the Year, Intersport announced today. Fans can vote for Brown at http://www.Facebook.com/dunksoftheyear.

In his featured dunk, teammate Allan Chaney lobbed a perfect pass to Brown, who came in from the opposite side for the dunk. Brown elevated and threw the dunk down with his right hand – even though he is left handed.

Brown advanced through the semifinals two weeks ago and is now competing with three others for Dunk of the Year. Brown’s alley-oop is up against a powerful posterization by Louisville’s Chane Behanan, a hoop-shaking alley-oop by Baylor’s Cory Jefferson and a reverse alley-oop by Detroit’s Doug Anderson. To watch and vote for Brown or any of the other dunkers.

The winner will be announced during the 2013 State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships at 7 p.m. ET on April 4 on ESPN.

Brown wasted no time introducing himself to the college basketball world. The win over UNC Greensboro was Brown’s first collegiate game and his dunk was ESPN SportsCenter’s No. 1 play. He also scored 28 points, grabbed eight rebounds, had five steals and three blocks against UNCG.

Brown was named Big South Freshman of the Year and was the second freshman ever named to the All-Big South first team. He led HPU with 16.4 points per game and added 6.1 rebounds per game while shooting 51.9 percent from the floor.

HPU redshirt-senior Corey Law also won a contest through Intersport: he was named Dark Horse Dunker and earned an invitation to the College Slam Dunk Championship on April 4. It’s the third year in a row that HPU will be featured during NCAA Final Four events. In 2011, Shay Shine was a finalist for Dunk of the Year and was featured in a special on CBS. Last year, Nick Barbour competed in the 3-Point Championship.
