GC Softball Falls in Doubleheader to Ferrum

The Greensboro softball team (14-9, 8-4 USA South) fell in a doubleheader to Ferrum (20-6, 9-1 USA South) on Wednesday evening. The Pride lost game one 6-4, and the second game 4-3.

Ferrum got on the board first with a run in the third inning. The Panthers extended the lead with a run in the fourth, fifith, and three in the sixth to make it 6-0.

The Pride made a comeback in the seventh but came up short. Chelsea Brewer led off with a double to right center field and then advanced to third on a passed ball. Sarah Tompkins scored Brewer on a double to left field making it 6-1. Sarah Connolly followed reaching base on an error by the first basemen. Jackie Nicholson brought in the final runs on a three run home run dropping the game 6-4.

Connolly led the way with two hits. Rae Hall, Brewer, Tompkins, Nicholson had one hit apiece. Nicholson had a game high three runs batted in. Kelsey Sanfilippo took the loss .

In game two, The Pride threatened in the first and third innings with runners in scoring position but were unable to push them across until finally breaking through in the fourth.

Reihle Kash singled to center field to get the inning going. Shelby Drummonds pinch ran and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Tompkins singled up the middle moving Drummonds to third. Connolly got the first run of the game on a double down the left field line making it 1-0.

The Panthers reached the board in fifth with a run tying the game at 1-1. Ferrum took the lead in the sixth with three runs to make it 4-1. Greensboro again mounted a seventh inning rally with a Rae Hall two run home run but could not get any closer falling 4-3.

Greensboro outhit their opponents 8-7. Tompkins led the way with two hits. Hall had a game high two runs batted in. Hannah Pennell suffered the loss despite striking out eight hitters.

The Pride will look to rebound on Friday with a doubleheader against LaGrange. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club/Salvation Army.
