NCHSAA Wells Fargo Conference Cup Standings Through Winter Sports

Wells Fargo, along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, today announced the standings in the Wells Fargo Conference Cup competitions for the 2012-2013 winter sports season.

The Wells Fargo Cup award, sponsored by Wells Fargo and the NCHSAA, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. The Wells Fargo Conference Cup is a companion to the Wells Fargo Cup and recognizes schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performances within individual conferences. Wells Fargo and formerly Wachovia has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.

In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points. Conferences are listed alphabetically by classification.

Class 1-A Conference Results:

Carolina 1-A: The top three teams remain unchanged after the winter season with Rosewood continuing to fight off second-place Goldsboro thanks to top finishes in wrestling and women’s indoor track and field. Goldsboro finished first in men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and men’s indoor track and field and increases its lead over third-place Princeton. Conference Standings: Rosewood 40.5, Goldsboro 39.5, Princeton 31, Ayden-Grifton 26, Spring Creek 20.5, North Duplin 12.5.

Coastal Plains 1-A: Dixon remains the top team in the conference after the winter, sharing the conference wrestling title with still second-place Southwest Onslow, which also finished second in men’s basketball. Lejeune sits comfortably in third, finishing first in men’s basketball this winter. Conference Standings: Dixon 425, Southwest Onslow 415, Lejeune 385, East Carteret 310, Pamlico 300, Jones 185.

Four Rivers 1-A: Manteo and Riverside are in a deadlock for the top spot in the conference after both schools performed well this winter. Manteo finished third in cheerleading while Riverside captured a conference championship in women’s basketball. Camden moves into third, finishing first in cheerleading and second in men’s basketball. Conference Standings: Manteo 84.5, Riverside 84.5, Camden 71.5, Southside 57, South Creek 57, Northside 55.5, Plymouth 44.5, Perquimans 43.5.

Smoky Mountain 1-A: With a second-place finish in men’s basketball and a tie for second in wrestling, Swain is able to hold off surging Hayesville, which with a league title in men’s basketball is now second. Murphy falls to third, despite tying for second in wrestling with conference leader Swain. Conference Standings: Swain 77, Hayesville 74, Murphy 72.5, Cherokee 63, Robbinsville 57, Andrews 49.5, Rosman 42, Highlands 39.5, Blue Ridge 33.5, Hiwassee Dam 25, Nantahala 19.

Tar Roanoke 1-A: Gates County is still the conference leader after the winter, capturing a league title in women’s basketball. KIPP Pride and North Edgecombe are now in a deadlock for second, and both schools will look to the spring season to break the tie. Conference Standings: Gates County 320, KIPP Pride 245, North Edgecombe 245, Northampton County 235, Southeast Halifax 215, Weldon 165.

Tideland 1-A: With a conference championship in men’s basketball, Columbia continues to lead the conference after the winter season. Previously third-place Mattamuskeet is now in second, trading places with Creswell, which fell to third but is only trailing its conference opponent by a single point. Conference Standings: Columbia 28, Mattamuskeet 19, Creswell 18, Cape Hatteras 15, Ocracoke 15.

Tri-County 1-A: Lakewood surges from its previous third-place position to take first in the conference after the winter. The conference leader finished first in women’s basketball and second in men’s and women’s indoor track and field. Midway is now second, just edging out Wallace-Rose Hill, the conference men’s basketball champion, and Heide Trask who are in a deadlock for third. Conference Standings: Lakewood 56.5, Midway 46.5, Wallace-Rose Hill 46, Heide Trask 46, James Kenan 44.5, Pender 43, Hobbton 28.5, Union 28.5.

Yadkin Valley 1-A: Coming up all the way from forth, Albemarle claims the conference lead after the winter thanks to second-place finishes in men’s basketball and women’s swimming. Previous conference leader Gray Stone Day is now second despite a sweep of the conference swimming championships while East Montgomery drops to third. Class 1-A/2-A Conference Results:

Carolina 12 1-A/2-A: Championships in men’s basketball and men’s swimming as well as a second-place finish in women’s swimming secure the top spot for Carrboro. Northwood moves from its previous fourth-place position to second thanks to a conference women’s basketball title and runner-up performances in men’s basketball and wrestling. Cedar Ridge remains in third, finishing second in women’s basketball. Conference Standings: Carrboro 100.5, Northwood 82.5, Cedar Ridge 81, North Carolina School of Science and Math 76.5, Durham School of the Arts 65, Raleigh Charter 62.5, Voyager Academy 48, South Granville 46, Franklin Academy 39.5, Granville Central 31, River Mill Academy 29, Roxboro Community 21.5.

Mountain Valley 1-A/2-A: Wilkes Central has moved into first after the winter, finishing second in men’s basketball and wrestling. Conference crowns in men’s basketball and women’s swimming propel Elkin from its previous fifth-place position into second, where it is tied with Forbush, which finished first in men’s swimming and second in women’s swimming. Conference Standings: Wilkes Central 74.5, Elkin 63.5, Forbush 63.5, West Wilkes 59.5, Ashe County 56.5, North Wilkes 56.5, East Wilkes 45, Starmount 41, Alleghany 28.

Northwest 1-A/2-A: West Stokes and Bishop McGuinness are now in a deadlock for first after a stellar sports season for Bishop McGuinness, including a sweep of the conference swimming championships and a second-place finish in women’s basketball. Despite league titles in women’s basketball and wrestling, previous third-place North Surry is overtaken by Mount Airy, but the top four teams remain very close. Conference Standings: Bishop McGuinness 73.5, West Stokes 73.5, Mount Airy 72, North Surry 71.5, Surry Central 64, East Surry 62.5, South Stokes 51, North Stokes 33, Winston Salem Prep 19.

Rocky River 1-A/2-A: Cuthbertson secures its position as the conference frontrunner with top finishes in men’s basketball, men’s swimming, and women’s swimming this winter. Piedmont moves into second with a league title in wrestling, while Central Academy drops to third in the conference. Conference Standings: Cuthbertson 78, Piedmont 59, Central Academy 51.5, Forest Hills 46.5, Union Academy 45, West Stanly 42, Monroe 34.5, North Stanly 31.5.

Southern Piedmont 1-A/2-A: With a league title in men’s basketball and a share of the conference title in women’s basketball, Lake Norman Charter has increased its first-place lead over of the rest of the conference. East Lincoln has moved into second, thanks to a second-place finish in men’s basketball, while North Lincoln is close behind in third, finishing third in women’s basketball. Conference Standings: Lake Norman Charter 127, East Lincoln 118, North Lincoln 115, Lincolnton 109, West Lincoln 104, Highland Tech 85, Cherryville 79, Bessemer City 47.

Three Rivers 1-A/2-A: East Columbus now holds the top spot in the conference by virtue of a winter championship in women’s basketball. Fairmont is only one point behind after capturing a league title in men’s basketball, while previously first-place Red Springs is now tied for third with St. Paul’s. Conference Standings: East Columbus 27, Fairmont 26, Red Springs 24, St. Paul’s 24, South Robeson 21, West Columbus 14.

Western Highlands 1-A/2-A: Hendersonville continues to lead the conference after the winter season, adding a conference men’s basketball championship to its Conference Cup campaign. Owen moves up one spot to second thanks to a runner-up performance in wrestling. Polk County now sits in third. Conference Standings: Hendersonville 110, Charles D. Owen 103, Polk County 98.5, Avery County 86.5, Thomas Jefferson 83.5, Madison 75, Mitchell 73.

Class 2-A Conference Results:

Catawba Valley 2-A: A conference crown in wrestling and a runner-up finish in men’s basketball propel Newton-Conover to the top of the conference after the winter. South Iredell is right on Newton-Conover’s heels with second-place finishes in men’s and women’s swimming. Previously in fifth place, East Burke surged into third thanks to a top finish in men’s basketball and a second-place performance in women’s basketball. Conference Standings: Newton-Conover 59.5, South Iredell 58.5, East Burke 56, Bandys 55, J.C. Draughn 51, Maiden 46, Bunker Hill 34, West Caldwell 34.

Central Carolina 2-A: With a sweep of the conference swimming championships as well as league titles in men’s and women’s basketball, Central Davidson increases its lead over the rest of the pack. Salisbury holds on to second, thanks to a tie for second in men’s basketball, while West Davidson closes the gap with runner-up finishes in men’s and women’s swimming. Conference Standings: Central Davidson 102.5, Salisbury 87, West Davidson 85.5, East Davidson 74.5, Lexington 63, Thomasville 51.5.

East Central 2-A: Croatan finished the fall in third, but a stellar winter sports season including championships in wrestling and men’s swimming as well as a second-place finish in women’s swimming has the school now atop the conference. Topsail falls one spot to second despite capturing a league title in women’s swimming and finishing second in men’s swimming. Swansboro is now third with a second-place finish in wrestling. Conference Standings: Croatan 124, Topsail 120, Swansboro 116, Richlands 102.5, Clinton 95, East Duplin 91, Northside 84.5, South Lenoir 61.

Eastern Plains 2-A: In a tight race for the top spot, Beddingfield holds off the rest of the conference with a championship in men’s indoor track and field. Kinston moves into second and is only one point behind, thanks to a dominant winter season including a conference title in women’s indoor track and field, and conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball. Both Kinston teams went on to win state titles in basketball. North Pitt is now third with a league title in wrestling. Conference Standings: Beddingfield 48, Kinston 47, North Pitt 45, Farmville Central 38.5, Tarboro 29, Greene Central 26, SouthWest Edgecombe 24.5.

Mid-State 2-A: Jordan-Matthews increases its first-place lead by placing second in wrestling and a tie for first in women’s basketball with Reidsville. Reidsville was in third place but is now in second after the winter season. Graham moves from fifth into third, sharing the women’s basketball title with Jordan-Matthews and Reidsville, and also finishing first in wrestling and tying for first in men’s basketball. Conference Standings: Jordan-Matthews 46, Reidsville 39.5, Graham 37.5, Eastern Randolph 36.5, Providence Grove 36.5, Cummings 28, Bartlett Yancey 16.

Northern Carolina 2-A: With a wonderful winter season including championships in men’s basketball, wrestling, men’s swimming, and women’s swimming, Corinth-Holders solidifies its top spot in the conference. Roanoke Rapids breaks its fall deadlock with Franklinton to claim sole possession of second, thanks to second-place finishes in men’s and women’s swimming. Franklinton finds itself in third with a runner-up finish in wrestling but is still close behind Roanoke Rapids. Conference Standings: Corinth Holders 80.5, Roanoke Rapids 61, Franklinton 58, Bunn 57.5, Louisburg 40, North Johnston 38, Warren County 23, Northwest Halifax 7.

Piedmont 2-A: A top finish in wrestling and second-place performances in men’s and women’s swimming procure the top spot for Wheatmore, just edging out previous conference leader Randleman. Randleman shared the conference men’s basketball title with Trinity, which is still in third after taking first in women’s swimming. Conference Standings: Wheatmore 51, Randleman 49.5, Trinity 41.5, High Point Andrews 35, Atkins 30.5, Carver 9.5.

Class 2-A/3-A Conference Results:

Western North Carolina Athletic 2-A/3-A: West Henderson is still the frontrunner after the winter season thanks to a top finish in wrestling. A conference crown in women’s basketball propels Pisgah to second in the conference, moving up from its previous fourth-place position while Franklin and East Henderson are now in a deadlock for third. Conference Standings: West Henderson 415, Pisgah 365, Franklin 320, East Henderson 320, North Henderson 305, Smoky Mountain 305, Brevard 285, Tuscola 270.

Northeastern Coastal 2-A/3-A: In an extremely tight race for the Conference Cup, Northeastern surges to the front of the conference and leads the way after the winter, winning a league title in men’s basketball and finishing in a tie for second in women’s basketball. Currituck holds on to second thanks to a runner-up performance in wrestling while previous conference leader First Flight falls to third despite a conference championship in wrestling. Conference Standings: Northeastern 44, Currituck 43, First Flight 42, Edenton 39, Pasquotank 29, Hertford County 29, Bertie 16.

South Mountain Athletic 2-A/3-A: In a tussle for the top spot, Freedom comes out the victor and claims sole possession of first, edging out Shelby thanks to top finishes in women’s basketball and wrestling. Shelby swept the conference swimming championships and finished first in men’s basketball. Patton falls one spot but sits comfortably in third. Conference Standings: Freedom 60.5, Shelby 60, Patton 55.5, R-S Central, East Rutherford 33.5, Burns 30, Chase 26.5.

Waccamaw 2-A/3-A: With a sweep of the conference indoor track and field championships and swimming championships as well as a league title in cheerleading, South Brunswick maintains its top form. West Brunswick is still close behind in second thanks to third-place finishes in cheerleading and men’s basketball. Third place belongs to Whiteville who finished first in women’s basketball. Conference Standings: South Brunswick 73.5, West Brunswick 68.3, Whiteville 60, North Brunswick 48.5, South Columbus 43.8, East Bladen 42.3, West Bladen 30.5.

Class 3-A Conference Results:

Big East 3-A: Rocky Mount just edges out Hunt for the top spot in the conference with a first-place finish in wrestling, a share of the conference wrestling title with Hunt, and a runner-up finish in women’s swimming. Hunt falls one spot to second despite a conference title in men’s swimming in addition to its share of the wrestling title. Third place belongs to Fike, which finished second in men’s swimming. Conference Standings: Rocky Mount 113.5, Hunt 113, Fike 105, Nash Central 99.5, Southern Nash 98, Northern Nash 97.

Big South 3-A: Ashbrook and Forestview remain close, with Ashbrook continuing to edge out its conference opponent thanks to a championship in men’s swimming. Forestview, who finished first in women’s swimming, will look to the spring season to overtake Ashbrook. South Point remains closely behind the top two schools in third. Conference Standings: Ashbrook 123, Forestview 120, South Point 114, Crest 108, Kings Mountain 106.5, Hunter Huss 75.5, North Gaston 72.

Cape Fear Valley 3-A: Overhills is able to break the fall deadlock for first and claim sole possession of the top spot, thanks to a conference championship in women’s basketball. Union Pines is now second, despite top finishes in wrestling and women’s swimming, while Southern Lee remains in third. Conference Standings: Overhills 68, Union Pines 62.5, Southern Lee 58, Western Harnett 56, Gray’s Creek 52, Douglas Byrd 32, Westover 24.5.

Carolina 3-A: Chapel Hill captures the conference lead after a dominant winter season consisting of top finishes in women’s basketball, men’s basketball, and women’s swimming as well as second-place performances in wrestling and men’s swimming. Previous conference leader Cardinal Gibbons is now second, finishing first in men’s swimming and second in women’s basketball and women’s swimming. Orange is still third, winning a league title in wrestling. Conference Standings: Chapel Hill 58, Cardinal Gibbons 55.5, Orange 39, Southern Vance 26.5, Northern Vance 24, Oxford Webb 24.

Coastal 3-A: With a tie for second in men’s basketball and an overall sound winter sports season, Havelock is now the conference leader edging out previously first West Carteret, who captured a conference crown in wrestling. Washington is close behind in third thanks to a league championship in women’s swimming. Conference Standings: Havelock 63.5, West Carteret 60.5, Washington 59, D.H. Conley 58, South Central 52, Jacksonville 50.5, White Oak 47, West Craven 37.5.

Eastern Carolina 3-A: Triton increases its lead over the rest of the conference with a sweep of the conference indoor track and field championships and a top finish in men’s basketball. Charles B. Aycock swaps places with Cleveland and sits in second, finishing first in cheerleading, while now third-place Cleveland finished first in wrestling and women’s swimming. Conference Standings: Triton 85, C.B. Aycock 73.5, Cleveland 65, South Johnston 58, Eastern Wayne 56.5, Southern Wayne 39.5, North Lenoir 31.5.

Mid Piedmont 3-A: Conference crowns in women’s swimming and women’s basketball and a second-place finish in men’s swimming keep Ledford in first after the winter sports season. Asheboro exchanges places with Southwestern Randolph and is now second, finishing second in wrestling and third in men’s swimming. Now third-place Southwestern Randolph finished first in wrestling and second in women’s basketball. Conference Standings: Ledford 53, Asheboro 40, Southwestern Randolph 36, North Forsyth 35.5, Northeast Guilford 32.5, Southern Guilford 28.

Mid State 3-A: Northern Guilford continues its conference dominance as the top school swept the conference swimming championships and added a top finish in women’s basketball and a second-place performance in men’s basketball to its winter campaign. Eastern Alamance vaults from fourth to second, edging out its rival Western Alamance thanks to a top finish in men’s basketball and a runner-up finish in women’s basketball. Western Alamance is only a half point behind in third with third-place finishes in men’s and women’s swimming. Conference Standings: Northern Guilford 147.5, Eastern Alamance 120, Western Alamance 119.5, Walter Williams 110.5, McMichael 109.5, Rockingham County 106.5, Morehead 101.5, Eastern Guilford 101.

North Piedmont 3-A: The top spot in the conference still belongs to Jesse Carson thanks to a second-place finish in women’s swimming and a tie for second in men’s basketball with third-place West Rowan. East Rowan remains in second, finishing third in men’s swimming, women’s swimming, and wrestling. West Rowan added a runner-up performance in women’s basketball to its winter campaign to secure its third-place spot in the conference. Conference Standings: Jesse Carson 462.5, East Rowan 437.5, West Rowan 422.5, North Iredell 420, Statesville 402.5, South Rowan 390, West Iredell 365.

South Piedmont 3-A: Concord and Jay M. Robinson are in a deadlock for first with previously third-place Concord capturing conference crowns in men’s basketball and men’s swimming and finishing second in wrestling. Jay M. Robinson finished first in women’s basketball, women’s swimming, and wrestling to maintain its top form from the fall. Cox Mill is now third, finishing second in women’s swimming. Conference Standings: Concord 487.5, Jay M. Robinson 487.5, Cox Mill 427.5, A.L. Brown 387.5, Hickory Ridge 380, Northwest Cabarrus 342.5, Central Cabarrus 252.5, Mount Pleasant 235.

Class 3-A/4-A Conference Results:

Mega 7 3-A/4-A: A dominant winter season consisting of conference crowns in men’s swimming, women’s swimming, and wrestling increase Charlotte Catholic’s lead over the competition. Second place still belongs to Olympic, who captured a championship in men’s basketball. A solid winter season keeps East Gaston in third. Conference Standings: Charlotte Catholic 77.5, Olympic 60.5, East Gaston 51.5, West Mecklenburg 40, Berry Academy 35, Harding 30, Garinger 16.5.

Mountain Athletic 3-A/4-A: T.C. Roberson solidifies itself as the top team in the conference, increasing its first place lead with a sweep of the swimming championships and a first-place finish in women’s basketball. Asheville moves into second with second-place finishes in men’s swimming and men’s basketball and slides past A.C. Reynolds who is now third with a runner-up finish in women’s swimming. Conference Standings: T.C. Roberson 152, Asheville 103, A.C. Reynolds 93, McDowell 92, Enka 86, North Buncombe 84, Clyde Erwin 56.

Northwestern Athletic 3-A/4-A: A conference crown in men’s swimming and a runner-up finish in women’s swimming keep Watauga on top after the winter. Second-place still belongs to Hickory who finished in a tie for first in women’s basketball and in a tie for second in men’s basketball. Fred T. Foard moves up from its previous fifth-place position to now sit in third thanks to a top finish in men’s swimming. Conference Standings: Watauga 123, Hickory 114, Fred T. Foard 106, Alexander Central 104, St. Stephens 100, South Caldwell 98.5, Hibriten 76.5.

Southern Carolina 3-A/4-A: Marvin Ridge continues to fend off Weddington, who is closely behind in second, thanks to top finishes this winter in men’s basketball and men’s and women’s swimming. Sun Valley is now in the mix moving up from forth to third with a sound performance in men’s basketball and sits only a couple of points behind second-place Weddington. Conference Standings: Marvin Ridge 44, Weddington 42, Sun Valley 40, Porter Ridge 39, Parkwood 30, Anson 20.

Class 4-A Conference Results

Cap 8 4-A: Millbrook is able to take the top spot from Broughton with a formidable winter season including top finishes in gymnastics, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and men’s swimming as well as a runner-up finish in wrestling. Broughton is now tied with Leesville for second with both schools performing well this winter. Broughton finished second in both men’s and women’s basketball while Leesville captured a conference championship in women’s swimming and also finished second in gymnastics and men’s swimming. Conference Standings: Millbrook 81, Broughton 70.5, Leesville Road 70.5, Sanderson 60.5, Wakefield 53, Enloe 49.5, Wake Forest-Rolesville 43, Heritage 38.

Central Piedmont 4-A: Reagan breaks the conference tie for first and claims sole position of the top spot with a conference crown in women’s swimming and a share of the conference men’s basketball title with now second-place Mount Tabor. West Forsyth finds itself in third after a first-place finish in women’s basketball. Conference Standings: Reagan 527.5, Mount Tabor 485, West Forsyth 465, R.J. Reynolds 452.5, Davie 430, North Davidson 340.

Greater Neuse River 4-A: Clayton moves up a spot to claim the conference lead after the winter season thanks to a sweep of the swimming championships and a tie for first in men’s basketball with now second-place Garner. West Johnston holds on to its third-place position, capturing a championship in wrestling. Conference Standings: Clayton 181, Garner 176.5, West Johnston 156.5, Knightdale 153.5, Southeast Raleigh 142.5, East Wake 139.5, Harnett Central 132, Smithfield-Selma 118.5.

I-Meck 4-A: Conference championships in wrestling and men’s and women’s swimming keep W.A. Hough on top of the conference after the winter sports season. Lake Norman remains in second with Mallard Creek close behind in third. Conference Standings: W.A. Hough 89, Lake Norman 73, Mallard Creek 68.5, North Mecklenburg 53, Mooresville 46.5, Hopewell 44, West Charlotte 28, Vance 25.

All-Metro 4-A: A first-place finish in women’s basketball, second-place finishes in men’s basketball, men’s swimming and women’s swimming, and a tie for second in wrestling procure the top spot for Page who moves past now second-place Grimsley. Grimsley swept the conference swimming championships and sits ahead of Southeast Guilford, the conference wrestling champion, and Western Guilford who are both tied for third in the conference. Conference Standings: Page 63, Grimsley 57, Southeast Guilford 45, Western Guilford 45, Southern Alamance 43.5, Dudley 28, Ben L. Smith 20.5.

Mid-Eastern 4-A: Hoggard maintains its top form through the winter season, finishing first in men’s basketball and women’s swimming and taking second in men’s swimming. Ashley and New Hanover continue to battle it out for the second-place spot in the conference, with Ashley still ahead thanks to a runner-up finish in women’s basketball. Third-place New Hanover finished second in men’s basketball this winter. Conference Standings: Hoggard 53, Ashley 46.5, New Hanover 43, Laney 41.5, New Bern 34.5, Rose 33.5.

Mid-South 4-A: Jack Britt tightens its grip on the top spot in the conference with a league crown in wrestling and a tie for second in women’s basketball. Terry Sanford remains in second maintaining its lead over Pine Forest, which is still in third after placing third in women’s basketball. Conference Standings: Jack Britt 51, Terry Sanford 45.5, Pine Forest 38.5, South View 36, E.E. Smith 32.5, Seventy First 26, Cape Fear 22.5.

Pac-6 4-A: Championships in men’s basketball and wrestling as well as second-place finishes in men’s and women’s swimming earn Durham Jordan the top spot in the conference. East Chapel Hill drops one spot to second, despite conference crowns in men’s and women’s swimming. Durham Riverside remains in third, only one point ahead of fourth-place Northern Durham. Conference Standings: Jordan 63, East Chapel Hill 55, Riverside 45, Northern Durham 44, Hillside 29, Southern Durham 27, Person 24.

Piedmont Triad 4-A: Northwest Guilford continues its conference dominance with a top finish in women’s swimming and second-place finishes in men’s swimming, wrestling, women’s basketball, and men’s basketball. Southwest Guilford just edges out East Forsyth to claim second in the conference, thanks to a sweep of the basketball championships. Third-place East Forsyth finished first in men’s swimming and second in men’s basketball this winter. Conference Standings: Northwest Guilford 77.5, Southwest Guilford 57, East Forsyth 56.5, Ragsdale 45, High Point Central 40, Glenn 36.5, Parkland 20.5.
