GC Softball Falls in Senior Day Doubleheader to Piedmont

The Greensboro College softball team (16-11 overall, 10-6 USA South) came up short against USA South leading Piedmont (25-3 overall, 15-1 USA South) in a doubleheader on Saturday. The Pride recognized seniors Hannah Pennell and Reihle Kash between games.

Game one went back-and-forth, with Greensboro rallying in the seventh to send the game into extra frames. Sarah Tompkins singled home Chelsea Brewer to knot the game at 7-7.

The Pride stranded two runners as the game went to extras, where Piemdont put up four runs in the top half of the eighth to pull out the 11-7 win.

After going down 3-0 in the top of the third, Greensboro came back with two runs in the bottom. Kierstin Mckenna singled home the first run with a fielders choice by Chelsea Brewer knocking in the second.

Piedmont extended the lead to 7-2 with four more runs in the top of the fourth. The Pride answered again in the bottom with a two-run home run by Sarah Connolly.

Greensboro continued to claw back with a fielders choice RBI by Brewer in the fifth and an RBI single by Rae Hall in the sixth to set up the finale.

Both teams finished with 13 hits, as Alexis Hall, Tompkins and Connolly led The Pride with two each. Overall, ten Greensboro players recorded a hit. Connolly had a team best two RBI.

Hannah Pennell suffered the loss in relief of starter Kelsey Sanfilippo.

It was all Piedmont in game two, as the Lions went up 3-0 after 1.5 innings of play. The Pride got their only two runs of the game in the second on a two-run double by Jackie Nicholson.

Piedmont put it away, though, with one run in the third, five in the fourth and two in the fifth.

The Lions outhit Greensboro 12-8 for the game. Eight Pride players finished the game with a hit.

Pennell started the game and took the defeat, with Nicholson finishing out the final 1.2 innings.

Greensboro will hit the road on Thursday for a doubleheader with Meredith. The games will begin at 12 p.m.
