College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 11, Ferrum 8

GREENSBORO, N.C. –Daniel Hughey (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) scored a career-high four points with two goals and two assists in Guilford College’s 11-8 men’s lacrosse win over visiting Ferrum College Saturday night.

Hughey scored twice and had one assist in the decisive third quarter, which saw the Quakers (5-4) outscore Ferrum (8-6), 8-3. An Adam Fiore goal 35 seconds into the third quarter broke a 3-3 halftime tie and triggered a 5-1 Guilford run. Hughey scored at the 12:05 mark of the third quarter. Eleven seconds later, defenseman Nick Huckins tallied his second goal of the season after picking up the ground ball off the ensuing draw and taking it to the cage.

Hughey’s second score came at the 6:55 mark and opened an 8-4 margin, but the Panthers answered with goals by Tyler Poage and Daniel Batong to get back to within 8-6. Guilford reeled off the quarter’s final three goals, including two by Chandler Zirkle (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill), and took an 11-6 edge into the final quarter.

Ferrum’s Tyler Muckle scored a man-up goal with 11:05 left in regulation and teammate Ethan Wakefield scored with 2:41 left, but Guilford did a good job of possessing the ball and preventing quality scoring chances in the final quarter. Ferrum committed seven of its 22 turnovers in the final 15 minutes.

Guilford’s Henry Farley had two goals and an assist and Fiore also tallied twice. The Panthers outshot Guilford, 37-34, but the Quakers held a dominant 41-19 edge in ground balls and won 14 of 23 face-offs. Huckins had a game-high six pickups and caused three turnovers. Goalie Thomas Deane picked up five ground balls and made seven saves. Connor Manning won 12-of-21 face-offs and had four ground balls.

Will Walter paced Ferrum with three points on two goals and an assist. Poage also scored twice and Batong finished with a goal and two assists. Goalie Damian Pulos made 10 stops and picked up a team-high four ground balls.

The Quakers are in action Wednesday (4/3) at Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Hampden-Sydney College.
