College Baseball Final – Roanoke 8, Guilford 3

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Roanoke College’s Mark Manthe went 3-for-4 with five RBI in the Maroons’ 8-3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over visiting Guilford College Tuesday.

Manthe hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to set the pace of the game. Roanoke (12-15, 5-7 ODAC) kept chipping away, scoring one run in the third before Guilford (13-15, 5-8 ODAC) could score. A John Macon Smith grounder drove Will Byrd in during the top of the fifth inning.

The Maroons countered with a three-run bottom of the fifth, including an RBI single from Manthe and two-run triple from Clark Crutchfield. The Quakers caught a break in the seventh after Kent Peterson took first on an outfield error and plated Herc Ingels, although the late effort was not enough.

Manthe’s three hits was a game-best. The Maroons’ Cam Cassady and Reece Kingery had two hits apiece. Cluthfield’s two RBI was the second-best of the game. Jacob McMillian (1-1) earned his first win on the mound for Roanoke after allowing zero earned runs in five innings. Tyler Grouten, Cameron Holshouser and Austin Gregory each had a hand in Roanoke’s zero earned runs allowed.

Guilford’s Ingels led the team with two hits. Smith had the team’s lone RBI. Nathan Fulbright, D.J. Phillips and Justin Pittman each tallied a hit. Lou Trosch (2-2) allowed seven earned runs in 4.2 innings. Chad Wagoner allowed one in 3.1 innings of relief.
