College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Hampden-Sydney 12, Guilford 5

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Hampden-Sydney College scored seven of the final eight goals and broke away for a 12-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) lacrosse win over Guilford College Wednesday.

The Tigers (9-2, 4-0 ODAC) took a 5-3 halftime lead thanks in part to Thomas Armstrong’s game-high four goals, all in the first half. He scored twice to account for all of the second quarter’s scoring, but Guilford (5-5, 0-4 ODAC) shut him out for the rest of the night.

The Quakers’ Daniel Hughey scored 3:20 into the third quarter, which pulled Guilford to within 5-4. The Tigers closed the game on a 7-1 run and outscored the Quakers, 6-1, in the final quarter. Jess Hawthorne started the decisive spurt with five minutes left in the third quarter and his man-up goal with 75 seconds left in regulation ended the game’s scoring.

Guilford came out strong in the first quarter and owned a 13-5 edge in shots. Hampden-Sydney goalie David Noftsinger made four of his eight saves in the quarter, which helped the Tigers keep the game tied at 3-3. Hampden-Sydney held a 10-2 edge in shots in the second quarter, but Guilford goalie Thomas Deane kept the hosts to two scores.

Hampden-Sydney’s Brad Mostowy won 12-of-16 face-offs and collected eight ground balls, which helped the Tigers retain possession, especially in the second half. Hampden-Sydney picked up 10 of the game’s 11 ground balls in the third quarter. Guilford killed off three man-down situations in the frame, which helped keep it a two-goal game entering the final period.

James Hughes had three assists and Mike Funk added a goal and two helpers for the Tigers. Hampden-Sydney outshot Guilford, 33-11, over the final three quarters and 38-24 for the game. The hosts also held a 41-20 edge in ground balls.

Hughey and Chase Clausen both scored twice for Guilford. Freshman attackman Adam Fiore added two assists. Deane collected 10 saves and three ground balls in goal. The Quakers’ man-down unit limited the Tigers to only one extra-man goal in seven chances.

Guilford returns home to host Bridgewater College Saturday (4/6) at 1:00 p.m. in an ODAC contest.
