GC Baseball Beats Virginia Wesleyan 7-1 on Senior Day

The Pride baseball team (14-20 overall) defeated Virginia Wesleyan (7-20 overall) 7-1 on Wednesday afternoon. Greensboro honored their eleven seniors before the game, Matt Irwin, Matthew Parker, Steven Pfeiffer, Jimmy Pirro, Bill Wooding, Aaron Navarro, Joshua Powell, Seth Caison, Kyle Zembsch, John Atkins, and Brandon Matthews.

Greensboro took the early lead tacking on a run in the first. Parker doubled to get the inning started. Pfeiffer followed with an RBI single to take the 1-0 lead. The Pride extended the lead with four runs in the third.

Parker singled up the middle to lead off the inning. Pfeiffer singled to move Parker to third. A Wooding RBI single made it 2-0. Navarro doubled down the left field line pushing a run across making it 3-0. Powell singled down the left field line extending the lead to 4-0. The final run of the inning came on a Caison fielders choice to make it 5-0.

The Pride was back at in the fourth pushing two more runs across the board. Parker walked to lead the inning off. A Pirro hit by pitch put runners on first and second. Wooding walked to load up the bases. Navarro singled down the right field line plating two runs making it 7-0.

Virginia Wesleyan got their only run of the game in eighth to fall 7-1. Greensboro outhit their opponents 14-6 on the day. The Marlins committed two errors to The Pride’s one.

Parker, Pfeiffer, and Navarro led the way with three hits. Navarro had a game high three runs batted in. Zembsch got the win throwing six solid innings only allowing three hits and no runs. Atkins and Matthews finished the game in relief allowing one run on three hits.

Greensboro will be back in USA South action Saturday with a doubleheader against Methodist. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
